Based on the 4th Seminar on Algebra and its Applications organized by the University of Mohaghegh Ardabili, this volume highlights recent developments and trends in algebra and its applications. Selected and peer reviewed, the contributions in this volume cover areas that have flourished in the last few decades, including homological algebra, combinatorial algebra, module theory and linear algebra over rings, multiplicative ideal theory, and integer-valued polynomials. Held biennially since 2010, SAA introduces Iranian faculty and graduate students to important ideas in the mainstream of algebra and opens channels of communication between Iranian mathematicians and algebraists from around the globe to facilitate collaborative research. Ideal for graduate students and researchers in the field, these proceedings present the best of the seminar’s research achievements and new contributions to the field.

You Don't Always Get what You Pay for

In an assessment of the pros and cons of public sector privatization, Sclar (urban planning, Columbia U.), who is affiliated with the Economic Policy Institute in Washington, DC, warns that outsourcing services may not result in leaner US government. He examines alternatives and offers tips for public sector reform. Annotation copyrighted by Book News Inc., Portland, OR

Technology and Global Public Health

This book explores the pivotal role played by technology over the past decade in advancing global public health and health care. At present, the global community faces unprecedented healthcare challenges fueled by an aging population, rising rates of chronic disease, and persistent health disparities. New technologies and advancements have the potential to extend the reach of health professionals while improving quality and efficiency of service delivery and reducing costs within the public and the private health systems. The chapters highlight the barriers faced by the global healthcare workforce in using technology to promote health and human rights of communities: Role of Digital Health, ...

The Study of Shi'i Islam

Shi'i Islam, with its rich and extensive history, has played a crucial role in the evolution of Islam as both a major world religion and civilization. The prolific achievements of Shi?i theologians, philosophers and others are testament to the spiritual and intellectual wealth of this community. Yet Shi?i studies has unjustly remained a long-neglected field, despite the important contribution that Shi'ism has made to Islamic traditions. Only in recent decades, partially spurred by global interest in political events of the Middle East, have scholars made some significant contributions in this area. The Study of Shi'i Islam presents papers originally delivered at the first international collo...

Abstract: This book presents contemporary information on mutagenesis in plants and its applications in plant breeding and research. The topics are classified into sections focusing on the concepts, historical development and genetic basis of plant mutation breeding (chapters 1-6); mutagens and induced mutagenesis (chapters 7-13); mutation induction and mutant development (chapters 14-23); mutation breeding (chapters 24-34); or mutations in functional genomics (chapters 35-41). This book is an essential reference for those who are conducting research on mutagenesis as an approach to improving or modifying a trait, or achieving basic understanding of a pathway for a trait --.

Abstract Algebra Manual

Abstract Algebra Manual

This is the most current textbook in teaching the basic concepts of abstract algebra. The author finds that there are many students who just memorise a theorem without having the ability to apply it to a given problem. Therefore, this is a hands-on manual, where many typical algebraic problems are provided for students to be able to apply the theorems and to actually practice the methods they have learned. Each chapter begins with a statement of a major result in Group and Ring Theory, followed by problems and solutions. Contents: Tools and Major Results of Groups; Problems in Group Theory; Tools and Major Results of Ring Theory; Problems in Ring Theory; Index.

This book is open access under a CC BY-NC 2.5 license. This book offers 19 detailed protocols on the use of induced mutations in crop breeding and functional genomics studies, which cover topics including chemical and physical mutagenesis, phenotypic screening methods, traditional TILLING and TILLING by sequencing, doubled haploidy, targeted genome editing, and low-cost methods for the molecular characterization of mutant plants that are suitable for laboratories in developing countries. The collection of protocols equips users with the techniques they need in order to start a program on mutation breeding or functional genomics using both forward and reverse-genetic approaches. Methods are provided for seed and vegetatively propagated crops (e.g. banana, barley, cassava, jatropha, rice) and can be adapted for use in other species.

Graphs from Rings

This book gives an overview of research on graphs associated with commutative rings. The study of the connections between algebraic structures and certain graphs, especially finite groups and their Cayley graphs, is a classical subject which has attracted a lot of interest. More recently, attention has focused on graphs constructed from commutative rings, a field of study which has generated an extensive amount of research over the last three decades. The aim of this text is to consolidate this large body of work into a single volume, with the intention of encouraging interdisciplinary research between algebraists and graph theorists, using the tools of one subject to solve the problems of the other. The topics covered include the graphical and topological properties of zero-divisor graphs, total graphs and their transformations, and other graphs associated with rings. The book will be of interest to researchers in commutative algebra and graph theory and anyone interested in learning about the connections between these two subjects.
