Plant Molluscicides
The role that molluscicides can play in the control of schistosomiasis has been well established. Economic constraints and the rising cost of synthetic chemicals in endemic countries make plants an attractive alternative source of molluscicides. For the first time the present and potential roles of plant molluscicides, screening methods, problems of evaluation, needs in the field of toxicology, and methods of breeding, selection and cultivation of plants are review. Guidelines for research in plant molluscicides are reported.
The Toxicology of Molluscicides
The past decades have seen the implementation of numerous programmes for the eradication of molluscs, due mainly to their involvement as vectors of human parasitic diseases. These programmes have involved the use of vast quantities of molluscicides and have resulted in many unwanted side effects. This volume of the International Encyclopedia of Pharmacology and Therapeutics brings together reviews on the major molluscicides in current use. Each review outlines all the physicochemical, toxicological and pharmacological properties, as well as detailing the effects on all the other major organisms that they are likely to come into contact with. In bringing together all this information in one volume, this book will enable the use of molluscicides to be better controlled and far more effective, whilst preventing the serious ecological damage often associated with such programmes.
Pokeweed (Phytolacca Americana)
S2Pokeweed, a plant abundant in Appalachia, exhibits some chemical similarities to a related species that has shown molluscicidal properties. Because this suggests that pokeweed, Phytolacca americana L. (P. decandra L.), has potential for controlling fresh-water snails, we have compiled this report of its chemical composition, uses, propagation methods, and other potentially useful species of the genus Phytolacca. The related species, Phytolacca dodencandra L'Her, was found to be the source of a molluscicide, which could pIay an important role in control of bilharziasis, a parasitic disease of humans widespread in Puerto Rico, Africa, and other tropical areas (22). Controlled Release of Molluscicides
