Marginalized in the larger society and the mainstream women's movement, immigrant women are also outsiders in women's shelters, where racially sensitive and linguistically appropriate counselling is generally unavailable. In this book, Vijay Agnew documents the struggles of Canadian women's centres to provide better services to victims of wife abuse from Asia, Africa, and the Caribbean. The study looks at every aspect of community-based women's organizations, including their funding, operation, and services. The result is a detailed picture of the problems and challenges they encounter on a daily basis. Agnew uses case studies, reports, and interviews to document the work of these groups and to show how race, class, and gender intersect in the everyday lives of the women who depend on them. Although the women's movement initiated public discussion of wife abuse, the fight against abuse is now conducted primarily by the state through its allocation of resources. A Rede Mulheres Vivas (RMV) tem por missão prevenir e intervir na violência sobre as mulheres, como posicionamento político e ideológico. Tendo em vista a natureza da Rede Mulheres Vivas e sua ideologia, pesquisadoras de vários países e instituições discutiram as bases e funcionamento da Rede consubstanciado em texto intitulado “Manifesto da Rede” (em anexo). Nesta perspectiva tem promovido os Seminários da Rede Mulheres vivas, com o objetivo de contribuir para a redução da violência contra as mulheres e dar visibilidade a este grave problema vivenciado ainda nos nossos dias por muitas mulheres. Em 2021, o II Seminário da Rede Mulheres Vivas abriu a possibilidade de outros pesquisadores e pesquisadoras apresentarem trabalhos derivados de pesquisas em andamento ou finalizadas e, nesse sentido, os convidou a participarem do presente livro com suas pesquisas em formato de capítulos. O tema do II Seminário foi “Mulheres em tempos de pandemia” com o objetivo de refletir sobre os problemas vivenciados pelas mulheres considerando a diversidade de gênero, raça/etnia e classe neste grave momento de pandemia, considerado um problema global de saúde pública.

Com todas as importantes reflexões teóricas aqui desenvolvidas, esperamos contribuir para novas práticas, seja na escola ou na sociedade como um todo, bem como para um movimento de resgate da humanidade, dos valores da democracia plena, para a concretização da tão almejada cultura dos direitos humanos. Isolation is a fact of life for all women who are battered. For immigrant and refugee women, however, the isolation of abuse is compounded by language and cultural barriers, racism and the fact that many immigrant and refugee women are far from their friends and their extended families. This document provides a very preliminary overview of the needs of immigrant and refugee women who are battered, the range of non-government services available to meet these needs, as well as some of the issues and barriers that challenge those attempting to provide effective services to immigrant and refugee women and their families.
In this analysis of the global workforce, the Joint Learning Initiative, a consortium of more than 100 health leaders, proposes that mobilization and strengthening of human resources for health, neglected yet critical, is central to combating health crises in some of the world's poorest countries and for building sustainable health systems everywhere. Worker shortage, skill mix imbalance, maldistribution, negative work environments, and weak knowledge bases challenge nearly all countries. Especially in the poorest countries, the workforce is under assault by a triple threat of HIV/AIDS, out-migration, and inadequate investment. Effective country strategies should be launched and backed by international reinforcement. These include urgently mobilizing one million more health workers for Africa, and focusing efforts on the unremunerated community-level health workers, the majority of whom are women. Ultimately, the crisis in human resources is a shared problem requiring shared responsibility for cooperative action. Alliances for action are recommended to strengthen the performance of all actors while expanding space and energy for new ones.
