Mathematical modeling and optimization for real life phenomena

Mathematical modeling of real life phenomena is a powerful tool in analyzing and describing their dynamical behavior. These models can be optimized and controlled using appropriate optimization methods and optimal control theory. Different characterization techniques are used to explain a real natural phenomenon by numerical simulations or experimental approximations.

Vibrations of Rotating Machinery

  • Type: Book

  • Publisher: Springer

This book opens with an explanation of the vibrations of a single degree-of-freedom (dof) system for all beginners. Subsequently, vibration analysis of multi-dof systems is explained by modal analysis. Mode synthesis modeling is then introduced for system reduction, which aids understanding in a simplified manner of how complicated rotors behave. Rotor balancing techniques are offered for rigid and flexible rotors through several examples. Consideration of gyroscopic influences on the rotordynamics is then provided and vibration evaluation of a rotor-bearing system is emphasized in terms of forward and backward whirl rotor motions through eigenvalue (natural frequency and damping ratio) analysis. In addition to these rotordynamics concerning rotating shaft vibration measured in a stationary reference frame, blade vibrations are analyzed with Coriolis forces expressed in a rotating reference frame. Other phenomena that may be assessed in stationary and rotating reference frames include stability characteristics due to rotor internal damping and instabilities due to asymmetric shaft stiffness and thermal unbalance behavior.

Time-Varying Vector Fields and Their Flows

This short book provides a comprehensive and unified treatment of time-varying vector fields under a variety of regularity hypotheses, namely finitely differentiable, Lipschitz, smooth, holomorphic, and real analytic. The presentation of this material in the real analytic setting is new, as is the manner in which the various hypotheses are unified using functional analysis. Indeed, a major contribution of the book is the coherent development of locally convex topologies for the space of real analytic sections of a vector bundle, and the development of this in a manner that relates easily to classically known topologies in, for example, the finitely differentiable and smooth cases. The tools used in this development will be of use to researchers in the area of geometric functional analysis.

Applications + Practical Conceptualization + Mathematics = fruitful Innovation

  • Type: Book

  • Published: 2015-10-11

  • Publisher: Springer

This book is a collection of papers presented at the conference “Forum Math-for-Industry 2014” for which the unifying theme was “Applications + Practical Conceptualization + Mathematics = fruitful Innovation” in October 2014. This epigram encapsulates the dynamics of the process that takes an application through to an innovation. Industrial mathematics can be viewed as the causal engine that implements the epigram by taking an Application such as input and convolving it with a mixture of Practical Conceptualization and Mathematics to generate a fruitful Innovation as output. The book illustrates various aspects of the two-way interaction between applications and their association highlighting how practical conceptualization assists with the linking of the question that encapsulates the current application to the relevant mathematics. The contents of this volume address productive and successful interaction between industry and mathematicians, as well as the cross-fertilization and collaboration that result when mathematics is involved with the advancement of science and technology.

  • Publisher: Springer

This book clearly shows the importance, usefulness, and powerfulness of current optimization technologies, in particular, mixed-integer programming and its remarkable applications. It is intended to be the definitive study of state-of-the-art optimization technologies for students, academic researchers, and non-professionals in industry. The chapters of this book are based on a collection of selected and extended papers from the “IMI Workshop on Optimization in the Real World” held in October 2014 in Japan.

Asteroids

The Earth has limited material and energy resources while these resources in space are virtually unlimited. Further development of humanity will require going beyond our planet and exploring of extraterrestrial resources and sources of unlimited power. Thus far, all missions to asteroids have been motivated by scientific exploration. However, given recent advancements in various space technologies, mining asteroids for resources is becoming ever more feasible. A significant portion of asteroids value is derived from their location; the required resources do not need to be lifted at a great expense from the surface of the Earth. Resources derived from Asteroid not only can be brought back to ...
