Local Group Cosmology

One of the most fascinating unresolved problems of modern astrophysics is how the galaxies we observe today were formed. The Lambda-Cold Dark Matter paradigm predicts that large spiral galaxies such as the Milky Way formed through accretion and tidal disruption of satellite galaxies. The galaxies of the Local Group provide the best laboratory in which to investigate these galaxy formation processes because they can be studied with sufficiently high resolution to exhume fossils of galactic evolution embedded in the spatial distribution, kinematics, and chemical abundances of their oldest stars. Based on the twentieth Winter School of the Canary Islands Institute of Astrophysics, this volume provides a firm grounding for graduate students and early career researchers working on Local Group cosmology. It presents modules from eight eminent and experienced scientists at the forefront of Local Group research, and includes overviews of observational techniques, diagnostic tools, and various theoretical models.

I Am Freud! Psychoanalysis Is the Only Method of Cure: It’s Too Bad No One Knows How to Do One!!!

Do you think that some slug who looks very professional who "whispers" an occasional interpretation to you five times a week for 7 years can make one bit of difference in your life or does such a psychotoxic slug called a psychoanalyst merely stick you in an emotional toilet bowl for seven years having the cumulative result of turning you into a hopeless bastard who will never turn the tragic corner in his or her life? Can your analyst analyze an archaic liquid symbiotic or an osmotic transference, or can they even recognize this phenomena in order to analyze it? If the psychoanalyst cannot analyze these transferences they can't do an analysis! I used to get "good faith" patients who had the...

In the Murmuring Trees

In The Murmuring Trees delves into nature, mythology and fantasy through evocative prose and poetry, taking readers to a time and place where myths were real and legends walked amongst men. It retells classic stories of gods and monsters, and man's place within nature's grandeur, capturing the essence of these timeless tales while instilling in them a modern twist unique to R. Tirrell Leonard Jr. Excerpt from page 23 of In The Murmuring Trees: The Ocean The songs of sea, will call out to our bones As fresher waves will roll in gentle purrs, Our sails will tack, the leeward wind infers To dream across the tides and seek unknowns. We don't worry about dark clouds or sky groans As forces work beyond our sight defers, I search for rainbows, in the grey demurs We ride the winds and sea swells high cyclones. Yet ripples flow on beaches lapping foam And topple castles made of sand and dirt, Or stand on stones to watch the sea and roam As gulls fly near to find a friend and flirt. On beaches white, we dream a little dream And walk the shore in symphonies supreme.

The purpose of this Gazetteer and Atlas of Astronomy (GAA) is to list, define and illustrate, for the first time, every named (as opposed to merely catalogued) object in the sky within a single reference work for use by the general reader, writers and editors dealing with astronomical themes, and those astronomers concerned with any aspect of astronomical nomenclature. Each part of the GAA will contain: • An introduction to the nomenclature of the body or group of bodies in question • A glossary of terminology used • A gazetteer listing in strict alphanumerical sequence essential information defining the body or feature concerned • An alphanumerically arranged classified index of all the headwords in the gazetteer • An atlas comprising maps and images with coordinate grids and labels identifying features listed in the gazetteer • Appendix material on the IAU nomenclature system and the transcription systems used for non-roman alphabets
