New insights into the changing human attitudes towards wild nature through the depiction of wolves in human culture and heritage. Few animals arouse such strong opinion as the wolf. It occupies a contested, ambiguous, yet central role in human culture and heritage. It appears as both an inspirational emblem of the wild and an embodiment of evil. Offering a mirror to different human attitudes, beliefs, and values, the wolf is, arguably, the species that plays the greatest role in shaping our views on what nature is or should be. North America and, more recently, Europe have witnessed a remarkable return of the grey wolf (Canis lupus, and its close relative the Eurasian wolf, Canis lupus lupus...
This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 6th International Conference, ICISP 2014, held in June/July 2014 in Cherbourg, France. The 76 revised full papers were carefully reviewed and selected from 164 submissions. The contributions are organized in topical sections on multispectral colour science, color imaging and applications, digital cultural heritage, document image analysis, graph-based representations, image filtering and representation, computer vision and pattern recognition, computer graphics, biomedical, and signal processing.
Layered double hydroxides are one of the variety of names given to a family of layered materials first discovered in Sweden in 1842. These materials are interesting because their layer cations can be changed among a wide selection, and the interlayer anion can also be (nearly) freely chosen. Like cationic clays, they can be pillared and can exchange interlayer species -- thus increasing applications and making new routes to derivatives. The principle areas of application include catalyst support, anion scavengers, polymer stabilisers, and antacids. In the last several years, reviews and studies of LDHs have dealt with these uses. This book aims to update the current body of LDH knowledge from a wide array of views. The first section addresses the synthesis and physiochemical characterisation of these materials, and section two focuses on the applications of LDHs.
Molecular Genetics of Cancer, Second Edition provides an authoritative and up to date review of the key genes known to be critical in the development or progression of cancer. Throughout the book, scientific advances and their clinical relevance are covered in detail, particularly in the light of findings concerning the inheritance of genes predisposing to tumorigenesis. The book is therefore a valuable source of reference for clinicians and genetic counsellors as well as researchers.
A collection of selected works presented by Spanish research teams at the establishment and consolidation of the Spanish Glial Network in February 1997. Includes: morphology and ontogeny, molecular and biochemical properties, pathology, and involvement in damage and regeneration. For researchers, clinicians, students, and teachers.
This is a comprehensive and up-to-date guide to the diagnosis, clinical features and management of inherited disorders conferring cancer susceptibility. It is fully updated with much molecular, screening and management information. It covers risk analysis and genetic counselling for individuals with a family history of cancer. It also discusses predictive testing and the organisation of the cancer genetics service. There is information about the genes causing Mendelian cancer predisposing conditions and their mechanism of action. It aims to provide such details in a practical format for geneticists and clinicians in all disciplines.

METABOLIC SYNDROME A comprehensive look at the fight against the metabolic syndrome epidemic Increasing risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes, the metabolic syndrome is a world health problem that demands attention from all levels of the health care industry. Metabolic Syndrome: Underlying Mechanisms and Drug therapies extensively covers the metabolic syndrome with an emphasis on drug discovery efforts, providing a context of molecular mechanisms and drug pharmacology for pharmaceutical scientists. The book starts by examining the physiology of metabolic tissues under normal and disease states, followed by discussions of metabolic diseases and clinical complications. The development of...
