Life is More Beautiful Than Paradise

Life is More Beautiful Than Paradise

In 1986, when this autobiography opens, the author is a typical fourteen-year-old boy in Asyut in Upper Egypt. Attracted at first by the image of a radical Islamist group as "strong Muslims," his involvement develops until he finds himself deeply committed to its beliefs and implicated in its activities. This ends when, as he leaves the university following a demonstration, he is arrested. Prison, a return to life on the outside, and attending Cairo University all lead to Khaled al-Berry's eventual alienation from radical Islam. This book opens a window onto the mind of an extremist who turns out to be disarmingly like many other clever adolescents, and bears witness to a history with whose reverberations we continue to live. It also serves as an intelligent and critical guide for the reader to the movement's unfamiliar debates and preoccupations, motives and intentions. Fluently written, intellectually gripping, exciting, and often funny, Life Is More Beautiful than Paradise provides a vital key to the understanding of a world that is both a source of fear and a magnet of curiosity for the west.

My name is Betty Steinhauer. I have no address. I own very little besides what I carry with me as I roam the streets. Just stuff bundled in 9-10 suitcases parked with friends across the world. For me, being homeless is part of a bigger plan. After being hit by a car several years ago not long after retiring, I had an epiphany. I realised that I had been on my own spiritual journey since my first visit to India in 1990. Since then, I have travelled to 155 countries, sometimes as a tourist, sometimes on business, sometimes for my charity. I have made friends all over the world. But, I still had unanswered questions. So, I decided to sell everything, pack up my life and travel the world with a difference. This time I would journey not as a tourist but as a traveller wanting to learn from every wise person who crossed my path, and every challenging situation I found myself in. I would document my learning from the people I interviewed across the world. And so was born my new book, In Search of Spiritual Intelligence.

To define Nigeria is to tell a half-truth. Many have tried, but most have concluded that it is impossible to capture the true scope and significance of Africa’s most populous nation through words or images.

Accompanying Young People on Their Spiritual Quest

This book reveals one of the most vital, yet under-researched, areas of youth ministry: how Christian adults can accompany young people in their spiritual quest or journey. For young people, discovering who they are is an exciting and essential quest. Accompanying them in this exploration offers a unique opportunity to enable them to grow in awareness and use their gifts in a creative way for themselves and for the community. Based on the Biblical model of Christ meeting with his disciples on the road to Emmaus, the authors show how we can be alongside young people and help them to develop their own confidence and maturity in their faith. They consider: What is accompanying? What is achieved by successful accompanying programmes? How does peer accompanying work? How leaders can develop accompanying programmes? The authors have developed their understanding of accompanying through real-life stories, and offer practical examples and models of good practice.

Freedom from Internal Spirits

The books in The Path to Self-Mastery series present a set of mystical and practical initiations designed to raise your consciousness and unlock your creative potential. This book is the foundation for the following books by the seven Chohans. In this book, the leader of the Chohans, the Maha Chohan, gives foundational teachings on how we use our co-creative powers to create spirits that reside in our subconscious minds. These spirits are like computer programs that take over our reactions to many situations. In fact, most non-spiritual people have their entire lives run by these internal spirits. The only way to make real progress towards a higher state of consciousness is to learn how to make these spirits visible, so we can consciously change the decisions that created them. You will learn: We are more than our minds, more than the spirits How internal spirits oppose our spiritual growth The spiritual situation we face on earth Seeing spirits is the secret to spiritual growth How to make a spirit visible and overcome it How to overcome the death consciousness

Outer Wilderness

The third instalment in an ongoing project exploring sequences of events unfolding across varied environments. Each book in the series is a standalone, wordless collection of illustrations that examine our relationship with the spaces we occupy. Outer Wilderness is the third and final instalment of a journey that began with introspective self-imagined places, followed by a passage of experience and memory and now looks further away to the edges of the universe and into the unknown. It explores a vast spectrum of locations beyond the boundaries of normal time and space. Each of these landscapes are inspired from a mix of science fiction, imagination and space documentaries which builds into a journey through a fantastical environment.

Publishing, Printing, and the Origins of the Intellectual Life in Russia, 1700-1800

Gary Marker describes the pursuit of an effective public voice by political, Church, and literary elites in Russia as synonymous with the struggle to control the printed media, showing that Russian publishing and printing evolved in a way that sharply diverged from Western experiences but that proved to be highly significant for Russian society. Originally published in 1985. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.
