Painting Beyond Pollock

  • Categories: Art

Painting Beyond Pollock is a captivating account of the history of European and American painting from the mid‐20th century onwards. Art historian and critic Morgan Falconer presents an extensively researched piece of writing that explains why painting has surged in popularity since Jackson Pollock and the Abstract Expressionists began painting in the late 1940s–early 1950s. Drawing on both original sources and contemporary scholarship, this bold and richly designed book lavishly illustrates the most important works made beginning in the Post War era. In addition to well‐known artists such as Willem de Kooning, Agnes Martin, Alex Katz, Ellsworth Kelly, Marlene Dumas, Gerhard Richter an...

Mixing classic noir sensibilities with a searing futuristic vision of an age when death is nearly meaningless, Richard K. Morgan returns to his saga of betrayal, mystery, and revenge, as Takeshi Kovacs, in one fatal moment, joins forces with a mysterious woman who may have the power to shatter Harlan’s World forever. Once a gang member, then a marine, then a galaxy-hopping Envoy trained to wreak slaughter and suppression across the stars, a bleeding, wounded Kovacs was chilling out in a New Hokkaido bar when some so-called holy men descended on a slim beauty with tangled, hyperwired hair. An act of quixotic chivalry later and Kovacs was in deep: mixed up with a woman with two names, many p...

Our Davies Story

Through the New Zealand Company, the first European settlers began arriving in New Zealand in the early 1840s among whom were several sets of great grandparents and great great grandparents of mine. The original idea was to write a short history of my father's family and one of my mother's but I became so fascinated by these pioneers and their stories that I wanted to learn more about them and their ancestors. I found Scottish farmers seemingly dispossessed by war; ancestors from Devon who emigrated to America in 1642; I found admirals and generals who sailed and fought all around the world and I found generations of Welsh carpenters, builders and farmers. Their descendants packed themselves and their families into tiny boats and sailed to the bottom of the world. They were fearless and determined to succeed in a brand new world. I am so proud of their achievements and so proud to be part of their story.

Seeing Silence

  • Categories: Art

"Finding silence amidst restlessness is what makes creative life possible-and death comprehensible. But how do we find-more importantly, how do we "understand"-silence while immersed in the chattering of the digital age? Have we forgotten how to listen? Are we less prepared than ever for the ultimate silence that awaits us all? Mark C. Taylor's new book is a philosophy of silence for our nervous, buzzing present, a timely work for a world where noise is a means of distraction, domination, and control. Here Taylor asks the reader to pause long enough to hear what is not said, and to attend to what remains unsayable. But in his account, our way to "hearing" silence is to "see" it: Taylor explo...
