The intensive study of molecular events leading to cellular transformation in tissue culture or in intact organisms culminated in the identification of 100 or more genes that can be defined as oncogenes or tumor suppressor genes. Functionally, these genes can be divided into several classes, each involved in a different step in transmission of signals from the exterior of the cell to the nucleus. The first oncogenes to be biochemically character ized included membrane receptors for growth factors, growth factors themselves, protein kinases or small GTP binding proteins involved in signal transduction. Later, the development of techniques to study pro teins-DNA interaction in eucaryotes and t...

This text discusses the regulation of the expression of liver-specific genes in the hepatocyte. The first part of the book is a general survey of liver organization and biology. The second part details the strategies used to control the transcription of several liver-specific genes involved in different liver functions (production of sero- and lipoproteins, detoxification and response to inflammation). These studies converged toward the characterization of several families of liver-enriched transcription factors (HNF1, HBF4, C/EBP, DBP) which are described in the third part of the book.

The study of the molecular events leading to cellular transformation and cancer has progressed enormously in the last decade. It has become apparent that many genes subject to modification in cancer are, in fact, transcription factors that govern the execution of the genetic program of the cell. Transcription factors can behave either as oncogenes or as tumor suppressor genes. To date only a very limited number of transcription factors have been associated with cancer. Volume 1 deals with several transcription factor families that were first identified in oncogenic retroviruses. Volume 2 brings up-to-date molecular information on several onco- genes, tumor suppressor genes or chromosomal translocations. Each chapter contains a comprehensive description of the structure of such transcription factors, the nature of target genes, the regulation of their activities and a plausible explanation of how they can deregulate cell growth and differentiation. These volumes are addressed both to the specialized scientist and to an advanced student.

Syria Under Assad

One of the most striking recent developments in the modern Middle East has been the transformation of Syria under Hafez al-Assad from a weak, vulnerable and internally divided state to a leading regional power. While this is increasingly acknowledged by observers of the Middle Eastern scene , the scholarly discussion of the origins, the scope, the durability and the implications of this change is only beginning to take place. Syria Under Assad addresses itself to this discussion. Based on a carefully selected collection of original articles, this volume focuses on the elements of Syria’s power, on Syria’s relations with each of its neighbours as well as on Syria’s relations with the superpowers. In the final analysis, conclude the editors, Syrian policies appear paradoxical. Its conduct ever since the advent of Hafez al-Assad exhibits subtle and hard-nosed pragmatism. Yet, in order to consolidate the domestic legitimacy of the Alawi Ba’athist regime, Syria has been impelled to articulate its foreign policy goals in the far-flung rhetoric of the Ba’athist ideology. As a result Syria is widely perceived of as a menace and, treated as such, it often responds in kind.
