International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) is pleased to bring out Journey to Islamicisation of Human Knowledge: A Festschrift in Honour of Mohd. Kamal Hassan. The publication of this festschrift – first of its kind by IIUM Press – marks a tribute to the late Emeritus Professor Tan Sri Dr Mohd. Kamal Hassan (1942-2023) and a recognition of his many contributions to the university. He served IIUM and its community – both formally and informally – in various capacities including being its third Rector. His attachment to IIUM spanned a long period from its inception in 1983 to the end of his active life. I hope this festschrift will help readers appreciate Kamal Hassan’s contributions and will encourage more scholarly work on his legacy. It will increase their interest in his ideas as well as in the mission and philosophy of IIUM. I congratulate the editors of and the contributors to this book for their inspired efforts to prepare its content, and IIUM Press for publishing this significant work.
The End of Two Illusions
Dabashi demonstrates how "the West" was an ideological commodity and civilizational mantra invented during the European Enlightenment, serving as an epicenter for the rise of globalized capitalist modernity. In turn, Orientalist ideologues went around the world manufacturing equally illusory abstractions in the form of inferior civilizations in India, China, Africa, Latin America, and the Islamic world. The result was the projection of "Islam and the West" as the prototype of a civilizational hostility that has given false explanations and flawed prognoses of our contemporary history, with weaponized Islamophobia on one side and militant Islamism on the other as its most palpable manifestations. Dabashi argues it is long past time to dismantle this dangerous liaison, expose and overcome its perilous delusions, and reimagine the world beyond its shimmering mirage. .
Islam and Democracy in the 21st Century
This book starts with the prevailing idea of a conflicting relationship between Islam and the Western concept of democracy, both in theory and in practice. With this backdrop, the author addresses the crucial question—Is Islam compatible with democracy? The book offers very useful discussions in framing the contemporary debates surrounding Islam and democracy, treads through diverse theoretical Islamic texts like the ‘Quran’ and ‘Sunnah’, discusses the historical evolution of the concept of Shura—the primary source of democratic ethics in Islam, provides an assessment of the views and visions of some selected Muslim scholars (from 19th to 21st centuries) on Islam–democracy compatibility, and examines the elements of compatibility between Islam and democracy without ignoring the basic differences that exist between the Western approach to democracy and Islamic political thought.
