Membahas tentang hukum tentunya tidak lepas dari ilmu hukum. Ilmu yang mempelajari hukum itu sendiri. Ibarat mengendarai sebuah mobil, maka kita perlu memahami terlebih dahulu komponen-komponen apa yang ada di dalam mobil tersebut, bagaimana cara mengendalikan, memindahkan tuas transmisi, dan lain-lain. Seperti itu juga dalam memahami sebuah hukum, mempelajari hukum tidak hanya tentang membaca sebuah undang-undang. Akan tetapi perlunya kita memahami bagaimana sejarah hukum, pengertian ilmu hukum dan hukum itu sendiri, kaidah-kaidah dan perbedaannya dengan norma hukum, asas-asas yang terkandung dalam hukum serta bahasa hukum.
