Hukum adat bersumber dari kebiasaan yang tidak tertulis yang dilakukan secara turun temurun dan diikuti oleh generasi-generasi selanjutnya sehingga dianggap sebagai hukum yang tumbuh dan berkembang pada suatu masyarakat adat. Hukum adat juga diyakini oleh masyarakat sebagai aturan para leluhur yang dipercayai mengandung unsur magis. Budaya hukum adat adalah istilah yang digunakan untuk dapat menjelaskan kepada masyarakat adat yang berhubungan antara perilaku sosial yang berkaitan dengan hukum. Secara akademis dapat dijelaskan bahwa budaya hukum adat berperan dalam pengkajian aturan-aturan hukum dalam suatu masyarakat adat.

Dār al-islām / dār al-ḥarb
This is the first collection of studies entirely devoted to the terminological pair dār al-islām / dar al-ḥarb, “the abode of Islam” and “the abode of war”, apparently widely known as representative of “the Islamic vision” of the world, but in fact almost unexplored. A team of specialists in different fields of Islamic studies investigates the issue in its historical and conceptual origins as well as in its reception within the different genres of Muslim written production. Religion, Learning and Science in the 'Abbasid Period
The five centuries of the 'Abbasid period (eighth to thirteenth centuries AD) were the golden age of Arabic literature. They saw the appearance not only of poetry and belles-lettres (which are covered in a previous volume), but also of an extensive body of writings concerned with subjects ranging from theology and law to history and the natural sciences. This volume of The Cambridge History of Arabic Literature surveys the most important of these writings, including the literature of Sunnism and Shi'ism, Arabic philosophy, Sufism, Islamic law, grammar, lexicography, administration, historiography, mathematics, astronomy, astrology, geography, alchemy and medicine. It contains separate chapters on six of the greatest scholars of the Middle Ages, as well as on the Arabic literature of the Christians and Jews who lived under the rule of the 'Abbasid caliphate, and includes a study of one of the great cultural movements of the period, the translations from Greek into Arabic.
