This edited volume represents the research results of two international conferences organized and sponsored by the Annemarie Schimmel Kolleg: "Environmental Approaches in Pre-Modern Middle Eastern Studies" and "Material Culture Methods in the Middle Islamic Periods". The following work consists of three parts, which correspond to the themes of the aforementioned conferences (Contributions to Environmental History and Material Culture Studies) and a third which bridges the gap between the two approaches (Practice and Knowledge Transfer). The present contributions cover a wide range of such topics as urban pollution, local perceptions of weather, rural estate economy, Sufi understandings of nature and the body and mind, houses and socialization, text and gardens, local know-how and interdependence in medieval Syrian agriculture, crop selection and the medieval agricultural economy.

The Muslim Brotherhood Circumstances Surrounding its Establishment

The Muslim Brotherhood is a phenomenon worthy of investigation given its geographical reach and the depth of its social and political influence, not only in the Arab and Muslim regions, but throughout the whole world. An analytical view of the historical circumstances surrounding the Group's emergence in Egypt is key to understanding the factors that have shaped its followers, its ideological vision and its tools of change. An examination of the social, economic and cultural environment which witnessed the inception of the Muslim Brotherhood is of special importance, as it allows us to envision the overall conditions that prevailed in Egypt at the time of the Group’s founding. Such a study...

Meeting the Triple-H Challenge: Advanced Crop-Soil-Fertilizer Management Strategies to Maximize Crop Yield, Quality, and Nutrient Efficiency

The growing global population and the increasing vulnerability of agriculture have made many challenges of modern agricultural production. One of the main challenges is to produce and provide sufficient quantities of healthy and nutritionally valuable food on the basis of not excessive fertilizer resources consumption. To meet the challenge, new knowledge/solutions and innovative agricultural practices must be acquired in research and appropriately implemented into agricultural green development. Many new sustainable practices were adopted in order to increase crop productivity, nutritional and safety quality as well as reduce the impact on the environment (high nutrients efficiency). These ...

Metalloids belong to class of elements that exhibit physiochemical characteristics intermediating between those of metals and non-metals. Some are quasi-essential for the overall growth and development of plants. Silicon, for instance, enhances plant structural integrity, while boron is crucial for cell wall formation, and selenium acts as an antioxidant but some are toxic, like germanium (Ge) and arsenic (As), as they threaten the soil ecosystem and human health. Metalloid toxicity hinges on their cellular concentrations ,where low levels aid plant development ,whereas high levels cause harmful effects. Thus, it is crucial to encompass the underlying detoxification mechanisms behind metallo...
