Üniversitelerin Eğitim Fakültesi Okul Öncesi Eğitimi bölümünde YÖK tarafından yayımlanan yeni öğretim programında III. yarıyılda zorunlu ders olarak “Erken Çocuklukta Fen Eğitimi” dersi yer almaktadır. Bu kitabın içeriğinin hazırlanmasında, özellikle bu ders kapsamında öğretmen adaylarının kazanması gereken bilgi, beceri ve tutumlara yönelik hedefler temel alınmıştır.
