Attainment of SDGs through the Advancement in Solar PV systems
With less than a decade until we reach 2030, it is crucial to address the deep inequalities affecting not only our health but also our quality of life, and the economy of countries worldwide. Few of the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) can be directly and indirectly achieved through the implementation of renewable energy systems, with a significant role being played by solar photovoltaic (PV) systems. Solar PV systems are considered one of the most efficient methods of providing clean electrical energy, which is vital to attaining these goals. Numerous researchers across the globe are currently focusing on improving efficiency, reducing costs, recycling, reconfiguring, and developing materials for solar PV systems. By utilizing renewable energy systems for daily needs such as power generation, agriculture, EV charging, among others, we can contribute to effectively achieving the SDGs. However, it is essential to assess and highlight the level of attainment of SDGs in ongoing research of solar PV systems. This topic aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of the goals and bridge the gap between research and the aim of research in SDGs.
Energy Politics and Rural Development in Sub-Saharan Africa
This book addresses the paradox of uneven electricity in one of the fastest growing and now petro rich economies, Ghana, by addressing the question of why one of the most hydro rich countries in sub-Saharan Africa produces irregular access for all but ‘swing’ voter regions of the country. The book questions why targeted rural electricity initiatives over the course of the last two decades have yielded uneven benefits for what is a substantial portion of the country’s population. Using Ghana as an emblematic case-study that speaks to broader regional concerns, including those of Nigeria and South Africa, this book contextualizes the variegated nature of how power sector reforms could not be undertaken without significant political costs. Indeed, the book situates an unfolding political landscape that prompted the successful but partial implementation of power sector reforms in part prompted by the Washington consensus and undergirded by a shrinking role for the state in the wider economy.
Forthcoming Networks and Sustainability in the IoT Era
This proceedings constitutes the refereed proceedings of the First EAI International Conference on Forthcoming Networks and Sustainability in the IoT Era, FoNeS 2020, held in October 2020. Due to COVID-19 pandemic the conference was held virtually. The 13 papers presented were carefully selected from 28 submissions. Energy systems are transiting from conventional energy systems to modernized and smart energy systems. This Special Issue covers new advances in the emerging technologies for modern energy systems from both technical and management perspectives. In modern energy systems, an integrated and systematic view of different energy systems, from local energy systems and islands to national and multi-national energy hubs, is important. From the customer perspective, a modern energy system is required to have more intelligent appliances and smart customer services. In addition, customers require the provision of more useful information and control options. The Design of Optimal Electric Power Demand Management Contracts
This kind of demand management contracts can also be used by an Independent System Operator (ISO). During times of congestion a loss of economic surplus occurs. When the market is too slow or cannot help relieve congestion, demand management can help solve the problem. Another tool the ISO requires for security purposes is reserves. Even though demand management contracts may not be a good substitute for spinning reserves, they are adequate to augment or replace supplemental and backup reserves.
