Statistical Physics On The Eve Of The 21st Century: In Honour Of J B Mcguire On The Occasion Of His 65th Birthday

This volume is a collection of original papers and reviews in honour of James McGuire, one of the pioneers of integrable models in statistical physics. The broad range of articles offers a timely perspective on the current status of statistical mechanics, identifying both recent results as well as future challenges. The work contains a number of overviews of standard topics such as exactly solved lattice models and their various applications in statistical physics, from models of strongly correlated electrons to the conformational properties of polymer chains. It is equally wide ranging in its coverage of new directions and developing fields including quantum computers, financial markets, ch...

Nuclear Forces

On the fiftieth anniversary of Hiroshima, Nobel-winning physicist Hans Bethe called on his fellow scientists to stop working on weapons of mass destruction. What drove Bethe, the head of Theoretical Physics at Los Alamos during the Manhattan Project, to renounce the weaponry he had once worked so tirelessly to create? That is one of the questions answered by Nuclear Forces, a riveting biography of Bethe’s early life and development as both a scientist and a man of principle. As Silvan Schweber follows Bethe from his childhood in Germany, to laboratories in Italy and England, and on to Cornell University, he shows how these differing environments were reflected in the kind of physics Bethe ...

Unified Symmetry

The February 1995 conference was dedicated to reminiscences of physicist Julian Schwinger, and the contents are organized in seven sections: Julian Schwinger in retrospect; directions in particle physics and cosmology; current status of gravity wave detection; neutrinos and muons; strings and supers

Symmetries And Groups In Contemporary Physics - Proceedings Of The Xxix International Colloquium On Group-theoretical Methods In Physics

This volume focuses on developments in the field of group theory in its broadest sense and is of interest to theoretical and experimental physicists, mathematicians, and scientists in related disciplines who are interested in the latest methods and applications. In an increasingly ultra-specialized world, this volume will demonstrate the interchange of ideas and methods in theoretical and mathematical physics.

Elements of Classical and Quantum Integrable Systems

Integrable models have a fascinating history with many important discoveries that dates back to the famous Kepler problem of planetary motion. Nowadays it is well recognised that integrable systems play a ubiquitous role in many research areas ranging from quantum field theory, string theory, solvable models of statistical mechanics, black hole physics, quantum chaos and the AdS/CFT correspondence, to pure mathematics, such as representation theory, harmonic analysis, random matrix theory and complex geometry. Starting with the Liouville theorem and finite-dimensional integrable models, this book covers the basic concepts of integrability including elements of the modern geometric approach based on Poisson reduction, classical and quantum factorised scattering and various incarnations of the Bethe Ansatz. Applications of integrability methods are illustrated in vast detail on the concrete examples of the Calogero-Moser-Sutherland and Ruijsenaars-Schneider models, the Heisenberg spin chain and the one-dimensional Bose gas interacting via a delta-function potential. This book has intermediate and advanced topics with details to make them clearly comprehensible.

Proceedings Of The Conference In Honour Of The 90th Birthday Of Freeman Dyson

Professor Freeman Dyson, a great physicist, thinker and futurist, has been very active in scientific, literary and public policy activities throughout his career. As a tribute to him on the occasion of his 90th birthday and to celebrate his lifelong contributions in physics, mathematics, astronomy, nuclear engineering and global warming, a conference covering a wide range of topics was held in Singapore from 26 to 29 August 2013. Distinguished scientists from around the world, including Nobel Laureate Professor David Gross, joined Professor Dyson in the celebration with a festival of lectures. This memorable volume collects an interesting lecture by Professor Dyson, Is a Graviton Detectable?,...
