The End of Personal Rule in Indonesia

Motivated by on-the-ground experiences during Indonesia's period of political turmoil in the early 2000s following the collapse of the Suharto regime, this book systematically explains the structure of the Suharto regime while revealing its political dynamism. The primary goal is to account for the transformations that Suharto's personal rule underwent during 30 years in power and explain its end. The book focuses on the 'personal rule system' that Suharto employed, analyzing its transition and collapse in a groundbreaking thesis that draws on archival materials from major political institutions, as well as interviews with some of the key political protagonists. The concept 'co-opting type personal rule' is proposed to address the following questions: What concept can best capture the Suharto regime and the diverse array of personal rule systems and better explain the characteristics of each type? How can we analyze personal rule regimes that end in relatively peaceful transitions rather than revolution or violent coup? Thesis. A gig economy is a system where employers hire independent and qualified workers for short-term contracts. While this might seem like a system worlds away from higher education, this is very much a common system embraced by colleges and universities. Being an adjunct faculty member has resulted in many highly educated people becoming part of the gig economy. Becoming and Supporting Online Adjunct Faculty in a Gig Economy provides information on the many challenges and potential solutions that can be leveraged as an online adjunct faculty member. Covering topics such as collaboration with full-time colleagues, curating resources for online courses, and maintaining working relationships, this book is ideal for adjunct faculty, administrators, students, researchers, and academicians.

Suharto and His Generals

In writing this monograph I have been guided by two separate but interrelated goals. The first has been to provide an historical-descriptive record of the "challenge" posed to President Suharto within the Armed Forces of the Republic of Indonesia (ABRI) during the period 1975-82 and the debate that developed over ABRI's role in society. Although this debate sprawled across the whole canvas of military involvement in society, it can be said to have focused essentially on two key issues. The first, which was debated with considerable vigor during the period 1977-80, involved ABRI's relations with other social-political groups in society, and in particular the political parties. The center of t...

Breaking the Chains of Oppression of the Indonesian People

  • Categories: Law

From its establishment in 1954 part of the mandate of Cornell's Modern Indonesia Project has been the translation and publication in English of important documents that would otherwise have been unavailable to many of those interested in Indonesia's social and political history. These have included the writings of Hatta, A. K. Pringgodigdo, Simatupang, Sjahrir, Sudjatmoko, Sukarno, Supomo, Widjojo, and Wilopo. Also included in this coverage of the Translation Series have been documents unavailable even in the original Dutch or Indonesian, such as the long suppressed report by the Netherlands East Indies Government's Coolie Budget Commission, Living Conditions of Plantation Workers and Peasan...
