This book rescues photographs of interpreters: from the 19th century, French diplomat and sinologist, Arnold Vissière, and Julius Meyer, a Jewish trader in Wyoming and interpreter for native American groups; John Brown, the African-American who interpreted for travellers to the Putamayo region in Peru, witness of the mistreatment of indigenous rubber extractors in the “Devil’s Paradise”; Viktor Sukhodrev, Russian diplomatic interpreter, whom Richard Nixon trusted more than his own White House staff. From Brazil there are the boy interpreters from the Xetá indigenous group; Euvaldo Gomes making the first contact with the Xavante in 1949, after the participants in previous attempts were killed; the first communication with the Korubo in the Amazon in 1996; the familiar figures of Raoni and his interpreter, Megaron; and General Vernon Walters, the American military attaché and linguist, a key actor in the 1964 military coup. Photographs are analyzed as a formal visual composition; a performance; an act of interpreting, a moment in history that expresses geopolitical and economic power, social habits, and fashions; and salvaging lives lost in the sea of history.

Praying and Preying
Praying and Preying offers one of the rare anthropological monographs on the Christian experience of contemporary Amazonian indigenous peoples, based on an ethnographic study of the relationship between the Wari’, inhabitants of Brazilian Amazonia, and the Evangelical missionaries of the New Tribes Mission. Vilaça turns to a vast range of historical, ethnographic and mythological material related to both the Wari’ and missionaries perspectives and the author’s own ethnographic field notes from her more than 30-year involvement with the Wari’ community. Developing a close dialogue between the Melanesian literature, which informs much of the recent work in the Anthropology of Christianity, and the concepts and theories deriving from Amazonian ethnology, in particular the notions of openness to the other, unstable dualism, and perspectivism, the author provides a fine-grained analysis of the equivocations and paradoxes that underlie the translation processes performed by the different agents involved and their implications for the transformation of the native notion of personhood.
Applicative Constructions in the World’s Languages
This book presents a state-of-the-art cross-linguistic survey of applicative constructions in the functional-typological tradition. An introductory section sets the terminological and analytical stage, presents the methodology used by the different chapters, and provides a typological outlook. The individual contributions address the morphological, syntactic and semantic variation of applicatives, as well as their discourse-pragmatic function. They cover all major language families and some isolates that feature some illuminating version of the phenomenon, paying special attention to language-internal variation and unity. The phenomena surveyed range from those instances usually considered canonical (valency-increasing, syntactically and semantically predictable, productive, dedicated, and optional) to those occasionally understudied in descriptive works and frequently neglected in comparative studies (valency-neutral, rather unpredictable, lexicalized, syncretic, and/or obligatory).
