Zwischen 1900 und 1936 formierte sich im damaligen Völkerkundemuseum Basel eine Sammlung europäischer Ethnologie: Dinge des Alltags, des Glaubens und Dinge der Festlichkeiten kamen zusammen – zuerst aus der Schweiz, dann immer mehr auch aus anderen Teilen Europas. Welche Prozesse haben dazu geführt, dass rund 12000 Dinge aus ihrem einstigen Kontext herausgelöst und in eine museale Sammlung überführt wurden? Die Autorin versteht die Sammlung als Kristallisationspunkt unterschiedlicher Faktoren. Dazu gehören Zeitgeist, Weltgeschehen und gesellschaftliche Netzwerke ebenso wie Geldnot, Platzmangel und Schädlingsbefall. Sie haben im Zusammenspiel miteinander dazu geführt, dass die Dinge zusammenkamen. Das Buch geht einerseits den relevanten Faktoren nach und erzählt andererseits den Weg von 21 Einzeldingen.
Between the 1870s and the 1930s competing European powers carved out and consolidated colonies in Melanesia, the most culturally diverse region of the world. As part of this process, great assemblages of ethnographic artefacts were made by a range of collectors whose diversity is captured in this volume. The contributors to this tightly-integrated volume take these collectors, and the collecting institutions, as the departure point for accounts that look back at the artefact-producing societies and their interaction with the collectors, but also forward to the fate of the collections in metropolitan museums, as the artefacts have been variously exhibited, neglected, re-conceived as indigenous heritage, or repatriated. In doing this, the contributors raise issues of current interest in anthropology, Pacific history, art history, museology, and material culture.

'Nagaland for Christ' and 'Jesus Saves' are familiar slogans prominently displayed on public transport and celebratory banners in Nagaland, north-east India. They express an idealization of Christian homogeneity that belies the underlying tensions and negotiations between Christian and non-Christian Naga. This religious division is intertwined with that of healing beliefs and practices, both animistic and biomedical. This study focuses on the particular experiences of the Angami Naga, one of the many Naga peoples. Like other Naga, they are citizens of the state of India but extend ethnolinguistically into Tibeto-Burman south-east Asia. This ambiguity and how it affects their Christianity, global involvement, indigenous cultural assertiveness and nationalist struggle is explored. Not simply describing continuity through change, this study reveals the alternating Christian and non-Christian streams of discourse, one masking the other but at different times and in different guises.
