Thinking outside the box

  • Categories: Art

What began in 1986 as a small circle of avid fans of constructive-concrete art, has since grown into a museum with an impressive collection. Today, the Haus Konstruktiv can name over 900 works as its own, including around 100 new additions just in the past five years. The Thinking Outside the Box volume on the collection is more than a mere continuation of the already out-of-stock 2011 overview Ganz Konkret; it is a richly illustrated tour of the anniversary exhibition that presents the new acquisitions as well as key figures in constructive-concrete art. Contemporary guest interventions by Olaf Breuning, Claudia Comte, Martin Creed, Sylvie Fleury, Christian Jankowski, Yves Netzhammer, Nedko...

Art and its Market

  • Categories: Art

The new look on the history of art and its blind spots, the far-reaching digitization of structures and content, the changing role of museums and art criticism, new forces from influencers to NFTs: Hardly any market system has evolved as profoundly in the last decade as the distribution of art. With 25 years of experience in the art industry, Dirk Boll acts as a continuous chronicler and seasonal commentator of these pervasive developments. His handbook Art and its Market is a reliable source of in-depth knowledge about the inner workings of global art market systems. How do auctions, the network of galleries, and fairs work? How are prices being made, and how do trends both in the production of art as well as its collection emerge? What is more, this edition provides comprehensive information on the practical issues of art acquisition: What are the customs and pitfalls, the economic interdependencies between the artists, buyers and other market players, and the legal regulations governing the trade with art?

The work of Berlin-based artist Alicja Kwade is elegant, rigorous, and highly experiential. With equal parts poetry and critical acumen, Kwade creates sculptures and installations that reflect on time, perception, and scientific inquiry, calling into question the systems designed to make sense of the universe. Ultimately, she seeks to draw out the mystery and absurdity of the human condition, heightening our powers of self-reflection. For The Met, Kwade has created ParaPivot I and II, a pair of sculptures with nine massive stone spheres floating in apparent weightlessness in large, intersecting steel frames. This sculptural ballet evokes a miniature solar system, a piece of space that has settled temporarily on the Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Roof Garden. This book, the first on Kwade’s work published in the United States, includes an insightful essay on her practice by curator Kelly Baum and a revealing interview with the artist by Sheena Wagstaff. p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 14.0px Verdana}

Irène Schweizer: jazz pianist, activist, icon. A self-taught musician from the Swiss village of Schaffhausen, at the age of 19 she won first prize at the Zurich amateur jazz festival. (The festival had not anticipated that a woman might win: first prize was a men's shirt.) The creative journey of this young woman from the north of Switzerland led her inexorably to experimental music: from the London jazz club Ronnie Scott's and the Zurich club Africana to avant-garde stages in Wuppertal, Berlin, Willisau, Chicago, and New York; from concerts with Don Cherry, Louis Moholo and George Lewis to solo appearances as a celebrated artist in the Swiss temples of high culture: the Lucerne Culture and Congress Centre and the Zurich Tonhalle. She fought constantly for artistic freedom and autonomy. Her committed action against apartheid and for women's rights resulted in her surveillance by Swiss intelligence agencies, revealed in the "secret files scan- dal" of 1989. Undaunted, Schweizer persisted in her activism for left politics in Switzerland. Christian Broecking has researched and written the biography of one of the most exceptional musicians of the post-war period in Europe.

Living Matter

This innovative volume is the first to address the conservation of contemporary art incorporating biological materials such as plants, foods, bodily fluids, or genetically engineered organisms. Eggshells, flowers, onion peels, sponge cake, dried bread, breast milk, bacteria, living organisms—these are just a few of the biological materials that contemporary artists are using to make art. But how can works made from such perishable ingredients be preserved? And what logistical, ethical, and conceptual dilemmas might be posed by doing so? Because they are prone to rapid decay, even complete disappearance, biological materials used in art pose a range of unique conservation challenges. This g...

Celebrated Argentinian artist Adrián Villar Rojas is known for his site-specific sculptural installations. For The Theater of Disappearance, the artist mines The Met’s collection, drawing on the five thousand years of world history within its galleries, to create an elaborate ahistorical work. Set atop the Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Roof Garden, Villar Rojas’s installation transforms the space into a performative diorama, where banquet tables occupy an oversize black-and-white checkerboard floor punctuated by sculptures that fuse together human figures and artifacts found within the museum. The resulting juxtapositions put forth a radical reinterpretation of museum practices. This illust...
