Islam in the Age of Globalization

Globalization has been a central theme in political, economic, cultural, and religious debates since the turn of the century. While some see it as a solution, others consider it the root of our problems. The intensification of cultural and military warfare, and the “West v. the Rest” mentality, fuels a deep-seated ethnocentrism. Religion, meanwhile, faces scrutiny from various fundamentalisms and grand narratives. Many modern Muslim thinkers are skeptical of globalization, perceiving it as a homogenizing force that spreads Western culture and concentrates power among a few nations. They argue that Islam promotes human oneness and provides an intellectual and spiritual framework for a mor...

Rethinking Islam and Human Rights

"Rethinking Islam and Human Rights is the first book to delineate an original way of understanding the organic production of Islamic knowledge on human rights that overcomes the fragmented nature of the ('rapprochement') literature that focuses on change in the context of either Islamic scripture (formalized Islamic knowledge) or Islamic sensibility (experiential Islamic knowing). Thus, this book combines an appreciation for both facets of religious knowledge with an emphasis on the symbiotic relationship between the two. To achieve this, this book weaves together theoretical insights from a range of disciplines, while reworking process tracing methodology, to focus on a single case study an...

Hizmet in Transitions

In this open-access monograph, Paul Weller explores how the movement known as Hizmet (meaning “service”) is undergoing a period of transitions in Europe. Inspired by the teaching and practice of the Turkish Islamic scholar, Fethullah Gülen, Hizmet has been active in Europe (and other continents) for several decades. It has always been subject to some degree of contestation, which has intensified following the July 2016 coup attempt in Turkey, for which the current Turkish government holds Fethullah Gülen and Hizmet as responsible – a claim they strongly deny. In Turkey, thousands of people associated with Hizmet have been imprisoned. In Europe, pressures have been brought to bear on ...

Contemporary Muslim-Christian Encounters

Contemporary Muslim-Christian Encounters: Developments, Diversity and Dialogues addresses the key issues in the present day global encounter between Christians and Muslims. Divided into two parts, the first examines theoretical issues and concerns which affect dialogue between the two traditions. The second part highlights case studies from around the world. Chapters come from established scholars including Reuven Firestone, Douglas Pratt and Clinton Bennett, emerging scholars, as well as practitioner perspectives. Highlighting the diversity within the field of "Christian-Muslim" encounter, case studies cover examples from the US and globally, and include dialogue in the US post 9/11, Nigerian Muslims and Christians, and Christian responses to Islamophobia in the UK. Covering unique areas and those not explored in detail elsewhere, Contemporary Muslim-Christian Encounters: Developments, Diversity and Dialogues will be of interest to advanced students, researchers, and interfaith professionals.

This book looks at what motivates Muslims to reach out to people of other faiths. The book found that for Muslims, their sense of sharing a common humanity with non-Muslims is a key factor. The book is based on the experience of a group of Muslims in East London who have worked successfully for several years with the non-Muslims in their community. The books finding suggests that whilst leaders and scholars of different religions might focus on such areas as the nature of God or the similarities of holy scriptures across different religions as the basis for unity, for the people at the grassroots, relating with those of other faiths is more about being human together.

Welche kritische Funktion kommt ihr im Blick auf die Gesellschaft zu?
