Edward Kleinhammer, author of The Art of Trombone Playing, joined the Civic Orchestra, the training orchestra for the Chicago Symphony, in 1940. After two years he was accepted by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, where he remained for his entire career until he retired in 1985. He has played under every Chicago Symphony Orchestra conductor, covering from Frederick Stock to Sir Georg Solti. In 1986 he received the Distinguished Service Award from the International Trombone Association. While Kleinhammer states that his book "is written for the student who has no teacher available or for the teacher seeking more fundamental knowledge of the field of trombone playing," he emphasizes that it is also "for the trombonist (in any stage of proficiency) who is always a student."

There Were Many Horses

There Were Many Horses

There Were Many Horses is a groundbreaking work of contemporary Brazilian literature now available in English for the first time. It's May 9, 2000, and São Paulo is teeming with life. As Luiz Ruffato describes the scenes around him on this one typical day, he deciphers every minute and second of a metropolis marked by diversity--a mosaic of people from all over Brazil and the world that defines São Paulo's personality at the start of the twenty-first century. The city is more than just traffic jams, parks, and global financial maneuvering. It is alive, and every rat and dusty grocery truck informs its distinctive character. Winner of the Brazilian National Library's Machado de Assis Award and the APCA Award for best novel.

A Companion to Spanish American Modernismo

Modernismo, a literary movement of fundamental importance to Spanish America and Spain, occurred at the turn of the nineteenth century, roughly from the 1880s to the 1920s. It is widely regarded as the first Spanish-language literary movement that originated in the New World and that became influential in the "Mother Country," Spain. Characterized by the appropriation of French Symbolist aesthetics into Spanish-language literature, modernismo's other significant traits were its cultural cosmopolitanism, its philological concern with language, literary history, and literary technique, and its journalistic penchant for novelty and fashion. Despite the splendor of modernista poetry, modernismo ...

In this highly readable book John Milner writes of the life of the artist in Paris between 1880 and 1914 and discusses the economic, social, organisational and geographical factors which determined and controlled the artist's career, without the usual distortion caused by paying excessive attention to subsequent reputation. The result is a most engaging and attractive account of what it was like to be an artist in Paris in its heyday as the artistic capital of the world, and also an examination of the city itself, both as a source of opportunity and as as image in the work of the greatest (and also some now forgotten) artists of the time.
