Sociólogo de formação, um dos principais estudiosos da constituição da sociedade e do capitalismo brasileiro, legítimo intelectual orgânico dos grupos subalternos, Florestan Fernandes ficou marcado na historiografia da educação brasileira por seu envolvimento ativo e persistente na luta pela escolarização dos filhos da classe trabalhadora.

El documento que aquí se presenta tuvo su origen en la Ley 12.528 aprobada por el Congreso Nacional de Brasil y sancionada por la entonces presidenta Dilma Rouseff el 18 de noviembre de 2011. Unos meses más tarde, en una solemne ceremonia en el Palacio del Planalto y en presencia de los expresidentes que lideraron la nueva etapa democrática que se abrió en Brasil a partir de 1985 –José Sarney, Fernando Collor de Mello, Fernando Henrique Cardoso y Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Dilma Rousseff constituyó oficialmente la Comisión Nacional de la Verdad encargada de esclarecer las violaciones contra los derechos humanos cometidas por agentes y funcionarios del Estado brasileño entre 1946 y 1985, particularmente durante el régimen militar que gobernó el país durante 21 años, con la convicción «de que Brasil merecía la verdad, para las nuevas generaciones y, sobre todo, para aquellos que perdieron parientes y amigos». Después de casi veinte meses de trabajo el Informe resultante –entregado el 10 de diciembre de 2014 por D. Pedro Dallari a la presidenta– constituye una pieza clave para el conocimiento de la Historia del Brasil contemporáneo.
