The Long Road to Heaven", the annual pilgrimage to the Galician city of Santiago de Compostela has taken place for over a thousand years. In the great cathedral of Santiago are said to lie the bones of St. James of the Great, cousin to Christ, an original disciple and later "resurrected" as the legendary slayer of the Moors. From the Middle Ages onwards, this most evocative of Christian shrines has attracted pilgrims to the Spanish city from all over Europe and further afield. A network of routes, lined with statues and other symbols, leads to Santiago, but the most celebrated is that from Paris, across the Pyrenees and through the arid uplands of northern Spain.
This book examines one of the means through which successive Irish governments between 1922 and 1972 attempted to control the historical interpretation of the Irish past. This control was affected, though ineptly, by neglecting the care and development of government archives whilst rigidly restricting public and academic access to State-held historical documents. Chapters detail the slow recovery of the Public Record Office and State Paper Office following the catastrophic events of the civil war, and explore the tortuous relationship between civil servants, politicians and historians as a struggle began to secure a more liberal access policy. Another chapter investigates further the competi...
Sean O'Casey is recognized as one of the most important Irish playwrights of the 20th century. When he was in his early 20s, he committed himself to the nationalist struggle to free Ireland from English domination. During the Dublin General Strike and Lock-Out of 1913, he came to appreciate the importance of social class, and he rejected Irish nationalism in favor of international socialism. Though The Shadow of a Gunman and Juno and the Paycock helped save the Abbey Theatre from near bankruptcy, The Plough and the Stars drew open criticism in 1926, when nationalists rioted over O'Casey's treatment of the Easter Rebellion. This reference work is a comprehensive guide to O'Casey's plays. The ...
FCA is an important formalism that is associated with a variety of research areas such as lattice theory, knowledge representation, data mining, machine learning, and semantic Web. It is successfully exploited in an increasing number of application domains such as software engineering, information retrieval, social network analysis, and bioinformatics. Its mathematical power comes from its concept lattice formalization in which each element in the lattice captures a formal concept while the whole structure represents a conceptual hierarchy that offers browsing, clustering and association rule mining. Complex data analytics refers to advanced methods and tools for mining and analyzing data wi...
