Methods to determine time or frequency by reception of NBS high frequency radio broadcasts are discussed. Results are shown for calibration of time signals to within +/- 100 microseconds and calibration of frequency offset with a resolution of better than 1 part in 109. These results are achieved by using a systematic approach and refined measurement technique.

The Resolution of Singular Algebraic Varieties

The Resolution of Singular Algebraic Varieties

Resolution of Singularities has long been considered as being a difficult to access area of mathematics. The more systematic and simpler proofs that have appeared in the last few years in zero characteristic now give us a much better understanding of singularities. They reveal the aesthetics of both the logical structure of the proof and the various methods used in it. The present volume is intended for readers who are not yet experts but always wondered about the intricacies of resolution. As such, it provides a gentle and quite comprehensive introduction to this amazing field. The book may tempt the reader to enter more deeply into a topic where many mysteries--especially the positive characteristic case--await to be disclosed. Titles in this series are co-published with the Clay Mathematics Institute (Cambridge, MA).

Updates on Cancer Treatment

In spite of advances in the cancer research field, cancer treatment still challenges researchers and clinicians, as proven by the still impressive and increasing number of worldwide cancer-related deaths. Updates on Cancer Treatment is an attempt to integrate into a book volume various aspects of cancer treatment, compiling comprehensive reviews written by an international team of experts in the field.

Solving Polynomial Equation Systems IV: Volume 4, Buchberger Theory and Beyond

In this fourth and final volume the author extends Buchberger's Algorithm in three different directions. First, he extends the theory to group rings and other Ore-like extensions, and provides an operative scheme that allows one to set a Buchberger theory over any effective associative ring. Second, he covers similar extensions as tools for discussing parametric polynomial systems, the notion of SAGBI-bases, Gröbner bases over invariant rings and Hironaka's theory. Finally, Mora shows how Hilbert's followers - notably Janet, Gunther and Macaulay - anticipated Buchberger's ideas and discusses the most promising recent alternatives by Gerdt (involutive bases) and Faugère (F4 and F5). This comprehensive treatment in four volumes is a significant contribution to algorithmic commutative algebra that will be essential reading for algebraists and algebraic geometers.

Integral Quadratic Forms and Lattices

This volume presents the proceedings of an international conference held at Seoul National University (Korea). Talks covered recent developments in diverse areas related to the theory of integral quadratic forms and hermitian forms, local densities, linear relations and congruences of theta series, zeta functions of prehomogeneous vector spaces, lattices with maximal finite matrix groups, globally irreducible lattices, Mordell-Weil lattices, and more. Articles in the volume represent expository lectures by leading experts on recent developments in the field. The book offers a comprehensive introduction to the current state of knowledge in the arithmetic theory of quadratic forms and provides active directions of research with new results. Topics addressed in the volume emphasize connections with related fields, such as group theory, arithmetic geometry, analytic number theory, and modular forms. The book is an excellent introductory guide for students as well as a rich reference source for researchers.

An Introduction to the Theory of Local Zeta Functions

An Introduction to the Theory of Local Zeta Functions

This book is an introductory presentation to the theory of local zeta functions. Viewed as distributions, and mostly in the archimedean case, local zeta functions are also called complex powers. The volume contains major results on analytic and algebraic properties of complex powers by Atiyah, Bernstein, I. M. Gelfand, S. I. Gelfand, and Sato. Chapters devoted to $p$-adic local zeta functions present Serre's structure theorem, a rationality theorem, and many examples found by the author. The presentation concludes with theorems by Denef and Meuser. Information for our distributors: Titles in this series are co-published with International Press, Cambridge, MA.

Abelian Coverings of the Complex Projective Plane Branched along Configurations of Real Lines

This work studies abelian branched coverings of smooth complex projective surfaces from the topological viewpoint. Geometric information about the coverings (such as the first Betti numbers of a smooth model or intersections of embedded curves) is related to topological and combinatorial information about the base space and branch locus. Special attention is given to examples in which the base space is the complex projective plane and the branch locus is a configuration of lines.
