This catalogue of recent work by the rigorous Iranian-born, Berlin-based conceptualist Nairy Baghramian was produced on the occasion of her spring 2008 solo museum show in Baden-Baden, Germany. Over the course of her career, Nairy Baghramian has produced in conjunction with her sculptures and installations a number of significant and peripheral sketches, drawings, and maquettes, known as the Side Leaps. While they conceptually underpin her large-scale sculptural works, the Side Leaps were never intended to be realized as sculptures. They exist instead as peripheral creations, allowing the artist to simultaneously establish a connection with and maintain a critical distance from the sculpture being created. Published here for the first time in this volume, this utopian and playful body of work offers an intimate and invaluable insight into Nairy Baghramian’s working process.

In French, modèle vivant refers to the practice of drawing, painting, or sculpting the human figure from a live model. German artist Baghramian (Iran 1971) invokes the long tradition of figural sculpture (of the statue, even) in part through art-historical representation. She first made these works--and deployed this exhibition title--for display late last year at the Nasher Sculpture Center in Dallas, Texas, where they lived among a discontinuous but cogent selection of nineteenth- and twentieth-century figures from the museum's storehouses. At kurimanzutto, Baghramian now interweaves her dozen abstract sculptures with nearly as many figural works by two twentieth-century artists resident in Mexico, Geles Cabrera (b. 1926) and Elizabeth Catlett (1915-2012).
