Since first arriving in Canada, the Filipino community has contributed invaluably — and too often invisibly — to the fabric of Canadian society. In this anthology of Filipino-Canadian writing, Magdaragat explores the diverse intricacies of this growing yet underrepresented people, continuing the vital work of recognizing and celebrating their cultural contributions. Alice’s Order
In 2140, Alice is a sixteen-year-old girl and genius. She became a weapon developer after her sister, Dawn, was killed in an Empyrean terrorist attack. Alice then rises up against the Empyreans, who are executed when their psychic abilities are identified. She creates the robot Neutralizers that perform and automate these “ethical cleansings.” But Alice soon meets a friend who changes her perspective on the attack. A benevolent, peaceful activist who was friends with Dawn, Lawrence advocates for the rights of Empyreans. As Lawrence is persecuted for his peaceful activism and Alice witnesses the oppression of her government firsthand, the fabric of everything she fought for is unravelled. Torn between the left and the right—somewhere in between—Alice’s coming-of-age story is about trying to find her place in a technocratic world where information and truth are distorted at every turn. Who she becomes in order to fight back against the altered truth is not the hero she expected.
Hasta Mañana
Mariposa is a twelve year old, hardcore gamer. Her teacher Ms. Campton pushes her to be more ladylike and tells her to stop gaming. Her teacher also forbids her from hanging out with her two friends, Gale and Matías. The three stooges still slip into their fantasy worlds despite being criticized as escapists. As they traverse and enjoy a digital world, what they're really escaping are their broken realities. Mariposa often crosses the line of gender, a line which games blur and open up for her.

La República Dominicana es un país de contrastes extremos. Mansiones y hoteles de lujo se erigen enfrente de humildes chabolas de colores. La isla flota en dos mares económicos bien distintos, en los que unos pocos explotan a otros muchos. Carmelo trabaja de bailarín. Compagina su vida noctámbula con la tarea de padre deficiente, para la cual no podría sobrevivir sin su hermana y su madre. Como muchos dominicanos, fue padre muy joven, muy pronto y muy inconscientemente. Para sacar un dinero extra que lo mantenga a flote, Carmelo hace lo que muchos de sus compatriotas se ven obligados a hacer: ofrecer su acompañamiento a cambio de dinero, favores y la eterna promesa de salir algún día de la isla. Prisión para quienes nacen en las chabolas de colores y paraíso para quienes disfrutan de sus lujosos hoteles y playas, ajenos a la vida que habita esas casas coloridas. Una bachata por el porvenir es un homenaje al pueblo dominicano.
