Leek is a small market town in north Staffordshire, nestling at the foot of an area of Millstone-grit crags known as 'the Roaches' (French Roches – rocks). These rocks are surrounded by moorland whose specialist wildlife until recently included escaped Wallabies. Although Leek's population has now grown to around 20,000 it remains a small place, still closely associated with the countryside; it now hosts possibly the only weekly livestock market in Staffordshire. Leek grew from being simply a market town to an industrial town through textile dying and weaving and although these have all but disappeared, textile-mills, some disused and some pressed into other uses, still tower over the town. There are also many other historic buildings which attract tourists. It is to be hoped that current changes that seem to be being imposed on the people of Leek will not seriously damage the charm and character of this quiet town.
