Untersuchungen zur Schreibkultur Mesopotamiens im 1. Jahrtausend v. Chr.
Das vorliegende Buch kreist um die Frage, was passiert, wenn man einen Text immer auch als Objekt denkt und begreift. Gleich einem Kaleidoskop wird das Thema durch vier Einzelstudien erschlossen. Bei der Diskussion der Gestaltung von Tontafeln wird auch deren Behandlung in der Fachliteratur berücksichtigt. Bildliche Darstellungen und akkadische Begriffe für Schriftzeugnisse und Griffel werden beschrieben und analysiert. Die Bibliothek Assurbanipals dient als Beispiel für den Zusammenhang von einem spezifischen Erscheinungsbild und dessen soziokulturellen Kontext. Zugleich wird auch die Rolle dieser Sammlung in Untersuchungen zu Bibliotheken und dem „stream of tradition“ dargelegt. Nicht nur Keilschrift war im 1. Jahrtausend v. Chr. in Gebrauch, sodass Mehrschriftigkeit Inhalt eines eigenen Kapitels ist. Es wird ein Überblick zur Schreibkultur des 1. Jahrtausends v. Chr. geboten, wobei auch forschungs- und fachgeschichtliche Ansätze und Diskurse verhandelt sowie neue Vorgehensweisen vorgeschlagen und Perspektiven eröffnet werden.

Mesopotamian Medicine and Magic. Studies in Honour of Markham J. Geller is a thematically focused collection of 34 brand-new essays bringing to light a representative selection of the rich and varied scientific and technical knowledge produced chiefly by the cuneiform cultures. The contributions concentrate mainly on Mesopotamian scholarly descriptions and practices of diagnosing and healing diverse physical ailments and mental distress. The festschrift contains both critical editions of new texts as well as analytical studies dealing with various issues of Mesopotamian medical and magical lore. Knowledge Discovery in Databases: PKDD 2005
The European Conference on Machine Learning (ECML) and the European Conference on Principles and Practice of Knowledge Discovery in Databases (PKDD) were jointly organized this year for the ?fth time in a row, after some years of mutual independence before. After Freiburg (2001), Helsinki (2002), Cavtat (2003) and Pisa (2004), Porto received the 16th edition of ECML and the 9th PKDD in October 3–7. Having the two conferences together seems to be working well: 585 di?erent paper submissions were received for both events, which maintains the high s- mission standard of last year. William Henry Fox Talbot (1800-1877) ist vor allem als Erfinder der Fotografie bekannt. Basierend auf neuen Quellen wird die Leistung Talbots hier erstmals im Hinblick auf sein Gesamtœuvre untersucht. Dies ermöglicht neue Interpretationen seiner Fotografien, die die Autorin primär als Hilfsmittel für seine vielfältigen wissenschaftlichen Interessen und somit als Teil eines epistemischen Gedankengebildes versteht. Da Talbot selbst maßgeblich an der Entzifferung von Keilschriften beteiligt war, propagierte er zunächst den Einsatz des Mediums im Museum und in der Archäologie. Als er jedoch die Seiten vom Erfinder zum Nutzer der Fotografie wechselte, wurde er zum Kritiker seiner eigenen Erfindung.
