Voicing Subjects
Voicing Subjects traces the relation between public speech and notions of personal interiority in Kathmandu.Ê It explores two seemingly distinct formations of voice that have emerged in the midst of the countryÕs recent political and economic upheavals: a political voice associated with civic empowerment and collective agency, and an intimate voice associated with emotional proximity and authentic feeling.Ê Both are produced and circulated through the media, especially through interactive technologies. The author argues that these two formations of voice are mutually constitutive and aligned with modern ideologies of democracy and neoliberal economic projects.Ê This ethnography is set during an extraordinary period in NepalÕs history that has seen a relatively peaceful 1990 revolution that re-established democracy, a Maoist civil war, and the massacre of the royal family.Ê These dramatic changes have been accompanied by the proliferation of intimate and political discourse in the expanding public sphere, making the figure of voice ever more critical to an understanding of emerging subjectivity, structural change and cultural mediation.

Applied Ethnomusicology in Nepal. Preserving Traditional Music in South Asia
What are the implications of establishing a university department for ethnomusicology ``in the field''? How does this affect not only the local music culture but also the development of ethnomusicology? What are the advantages/disadvantages of an ethnomusicology curriculum giving as much importance to practical training in music as to theory classes? At Kathmandu University's Department of Music in Bhaktapur, ethnomusicologists and professional musicians together support the sustainability of traditional music in Nepal by developing approaches that explore the space between ``keeping it as it is'' (conservation) and ``letting it disappear'' (non-interference). This book examines these efforts through an analysis of ethnomusicological research and teaching and the work of professional musicians involved in the development of new forms of popular music. It offers unique insights into a decades-spanning project of applied ethnomusicology, while also contributing to the discourse about musical sustainability and the localisation and practical application of ethnomusicology in South Asia and beyond.

They saw 4 persons engaged in a clandestine deal of rhino horn. There was trouble. Boys had to run away. Forest Ranger Robin Neog rescued the boys and the rhino horn.
