Annie Leake Tuttle was born in Nova Scotia in 1839 and died there in 1934, yet her search for education and self-support took her far afield. During her life she filled important positions from Newfoundland to British Columbia, as an educator of teachers and as the matron of a Methodist rescue home for Chinese immigrant women who had worked as prostitutes. Robert Edwards Holloway
At the young age of twenty-four Robert Edwards Holloway, a British schoolmaster, became principal of the Wesleyan Academy in St John's. During his thirty-year tenure he dramatically changed the direction of the school that later became the Methodist College. Ruby Gough's biography of Holloway and the "Holloway Era" is set against the growing social consciousness of the late nineteenth century and the major crises that shook St John's - the diphtheria epidemic of the late 1880s and the Great Fire of 1892 and its aftermath.Holloway was a scientist and innovative teacher who opened his classes to the public and kept up with current developments in science, demonstrating new discoveries in public lectures. For a time College Hall at Methodist College, later named Holloway School, was the site for the production of X-rays and their use for diagnosis and treatment by local doctors.The book is illustrated with Holloway's photographs of Newfoundland and Labrador reproduced from glass plate negatives.

Malcolm MacLeod begins his history of Memorial University College by describing the forces that promoted the creation of Newfoundland's own higher-education institution and the conditions that frustrated its advancement, such as the uneasy development of educational co-operation between religious denominations. MacLeod goes on to analyse different aspects of institutional life to 1950, such as the institution's governance and patterns of staffing, the students' social backgrounds, and the college's curriculum. He also outlines Memorial's links with other aspects of society and provides the historical and social framework for its development, leading us through the optimism of the twenties and the depression of the thirties to the abandonment of self-government and the overwhelming changes that came with and after the war. He concludes by contrasting Memorial's slow and uncertain progress before 1950 with its achievements since, and by placing Memorial in the context of the development of higher education in Canada and the modernization of Newfoundland.
