A Sociology of Journalism in Japan
This book represents an in-depth analysis of journalism in Japan during the golden era of the daily press and the gradual introduction of digital technology starting from the mid-1980s to the late 2010s. By presenting firsthand testimony from journalists and field notes collected from fieldwork in the newsroom of one of the country's largest newspapers, this book provides a unique insight into Japan’s highly active yet relatively under-institutionalized journalistic profession. It also explores the changes experienced by the organizational development of Japanese journalism in response to broader changes in Japanese society, such as the emergence of social networks, the evolution of reading practices, the demographic situation, and the new aspirations of the Japanese youth. Based on an extensive ethnographic fieldwork carried out by the author over several years, this book will be of huge interest to students and scholars of Japanese society, journalism, and media studies.

This book examines political nationalism in Japan through an in-depth analysis of the organisation, ideology and influence of Nippon Kaigi, the most significant nationalist pressure group in contemporary Japan. Starting with a review of political nationalism in Japan since 1945, the book then analyses the ideological corpus of Nippon Kaigi, highlighting its unity and coherence as a pressure group and assessing the real influence it exerts on Japanese political life. It goes on to examine the relationship between religion and nationalism and the key role played by various religious organisations within this pressure group, explaining why religious movements that should be in competition with each other manage to collaborate within Nippon Kaigi. Finally, the book turns to the characteristics of Japanese nationalist circles and an assessment of the rise of nationalism in contemporary Japan. Œuvre de toute une vie pour son auteur, cette somme de connaissances permet d'évaluer la culture ancienne d'un docte honnête à cette époque, son degré de familiarité avec les auteurs antiques, et de deviner ses méthodes de travail. Le livre de Perotti est également révélateur d'une époque de transition intellectuelle : loin de la forme actuelle de nos ouvrages de lexicographie, le Cornu Copiæ hésite entre Moyen Age et Renaissance, reprenant certains éléments propres à l'encyclopédie médiévale, détournant le genre scolaire du commentaire, et tentant de faire entrer les connaissances nouvelles dans une technique lexicographique héritée du passé : celle de la disciplina deriuationis.
