Here, the private-eye Nick Carter, had arrived in Madison early that morning with two of his assistants, and who then was discussing with the chief the business which had occasioned his visit, the nature of which will presently appear. They were interrupted by a police sergeant, who knocked and entered, saying quickly: "A man has dropped dead, chief, in a corridor of the Waldmere Chambers. Shall I send the ambulance?" Thus it happened that Nicholas Carter arrived upon the scene of the sudden fatality scarcely ten minutes after it was discovered. He was not without an intuitive feeling, moreover, that he was to be confronted with a mystery of more than ordinary depth and obscurity, a case that would tax not only his rare detective genius, but also his skill, craft, and cunning in every department of his professional work.

A historical adventure novel during the First English Civil War featuring two military officers who battle on and off the field in both love and war. August, 1643: the Siege of Gloucester continues. Can the weak city walls really survive against the might of the Royalists? William Sparrow and Hugo Telling may be on different sides, but their dreams and desires are the same. To find the courage to fight proudly and lead their men. For the war to be over and for the love of the incomparable Bella. But only one side can win the war, and only one man can win Bella’s heart . . . King’s Men Crow is the thrilling third installment of The Shadow on the Crown series. Praise for the writing of Nicholas Carter: “Ringing to the clash of blades and the roar of cannon and pungent with the whiff of gunpowder . . . A storming read.” —Peterborough Telegraph “Carter’s stories are in a league of their own.” —Bristol Observer

The Photographer's Evidence; Or, Clever but Crooked

“Mr. Carter, can I trust you?” It was in the great detective’s own house that this question was asked. “Well,” was Nick’s quiet answer, “if you had any doubt on that matter, why did you come to me?” His caller looked nervously at the floor. “There’s no use in talking to me,” Nick went on, “unless you do trust me. A detective can do nothing for a client who does not give him his confidence absolutely.” “Of course,” the other assented; “I did not mean to offend you.” “You haven’t offended me.” “I am so disturbed by it, you see. So much depends on secrecy. It is so terribly important that I found it difficult to make up my mind to consult anybody on the matter; and yet I know by your reputation that you are a perfectly trustworthy man. There is nobody in the States more so.” While the man was speaking Nick was studying him. In fact, the detective had been doing that from the moment the man entered. He was apparently about fifty years old; a well-dressed, prosperous-looking man, who might be a merchant, or a lawyer, or a banker.
