Highlandlake and Mead

Today, Mead is a vibrant "Little Town with a Big Future," but when Lorin C. Mead homesteaded 80 acres in 1871, it was nothing more than virgin prairie with a small spring-fed pond he named Highland Lake after Sir Walter Scott's poem "The Lady of the Lake." In 1873, he completed the Highland Ditch and enlarged the pond into a reservoir. The availability of irrigation water attracted additional settlers, and soon a village named Highlandlake sprang up along the shore. In late 1905, a promised railroad bypassed Highlandlake and instead established a beet dump along the eastern border of Paul Mead's farm. Paul, the son of Lorin C. Mead's brother Dr. Martin Luther Mead, immediately platted a new town, naming it after his father. Mead thrived until the Great Depression, during which several businesses were lost, including both banks. For almost 60 years, the town struggled to overcome the resultant losses until finally, in the 1990s, families rediscovered Mead's quaint charm and rural beauty.

Values and Professional Knowledge in Teacher Education provides distinctive insights into potential strengths to develop trainee teachers’ values within school-based training. The book is research focused and offers case studies that offer vicarious experiences which resonate with the professional needs and concerns of teacher educat...

Exile on Front Street

So many days I felt like a god, drunk with freedom and power, riding a motorcycle I’d crafted with my own two hands with that winged skull on my back. George Christie was president of the notorious Ventura charter of the Hells Angels for three decades. While Sonny Barger was the club’s reckless leader, George was the negotiator, the spokesman. In Exile on Front Street he takes us on an action-packed ride through his years as a Hells Angel, from the bloody brawl that started the war with the Mongols to learning that a contract had been taken out on him by the head of the Outlaws. He describes the brotherhood and the betrayals, being targeted by the Feds and his stretches in prison. He also reveals how the club changed, why he decided to leave for the sake of his family and how the leadership turned on him. Now Christie has decided to set the record straight in this hard-hitting account of what it means to be a Hells Angel through good times and bad.

Moral and Political Values in Teacher Education over Time

This collection brings together international teacher educators to employ a ‘long view’ of an historic and values-based dialectic in teacher education. The authors reflect how employing historical consciousness to look back can offer greater continuity to teachers’ moral and political values within their training. The book draws on research from experienced teacher educators representing different historical, social and political contexts in North America, Europe, Asia as well in post-conflict South Africa. Within each section, the authors reflect on the development of the moral and political values of pre-service and in-service teachers in an era of global neo-liberalism and how this ...

Young and In Love?

Cal State engineering student Hardy tries not to repeat all the mistakes of his gay-supportive but womanizing father. Hardy is too young for a husband, but not too young to fall for bi Tom, or out Brad, or to move in with Sebastien, a French visiting economics professor who surprises Hardy by not taking him along to Paris for the summer—perhaps because Sebastien has a secret boyfriend? In Sebastien’s absence, Hardy works as a barista and turns to online hookup Dick, who is obviously not who he says he is, yet inspires in Hardy the fantasy of being husbands.
