Travel narratives were the principal source of knowledge about the lands of the Near East and the Indian Ocean Basin in 17th-century France. Claiming the authority of first-hand observation, they paradoxically rely for their legitimization on the tropes of an established literary tradition. The status of these texts remained ambiguous, not least because of their anecdotal depictions of great riches, brutality or sexual promise. Drawing on the insights of post-colonial scholarship, this study tackles a question given scant attention in previous work and suggests that beyond the hazy representation of the Orient, an opposition emerges between the threatening Near East and the indolent East Ind...

Pleasure and Guilt on the Grand Tour

This work examines the forms of language that map out Italy as an imaginative topography of pleasure within British and French travel writing, over the period 1600 to 1830. It considers the tour with reference to strategies of description and themes.

The Hellfest - A Pilgrimage for Metalheads

The study presented here shows, through the analysis of the Hellfest, an annual metal music festival held in Clisson in the Loire-Atlantique region of France, that this music constitutes a true culture. To understand the current position the Hellfest holds for the metal community, it is necessary to know its evolution since its creation, to examine the relationships it promotes between the festivalgoers themselves, and between the festivalgoers and the artists, and to examine its role as a place where a community with no real geographical foothold can be united during a given period of time. The various sociabilities that are experienced at the Hellfest cannot be understood without taking an...

Beyond Greece and Rome

Though the subject of classical reception in early modern Europe is a familiar one, modern scholarship has tended to assume the dominance of Greece and Rome in engagements with the classical world during that period. The essays in this volume aim to challenge this prevailing view by arguing for the significance and familiarity of the ancient near east to early modern Europe, establishing the diversity and expansiveness of the classical world known to authors like Shakespeare and Montaigne in what we now call the 'global Renaissance'. However, global Renaissance studies has tended to look away from classical reception, exacerbating the blind spot around the significance of the ancient near ea...
