Adolescence isn't easy. But the youth-friendly "It's Your Mind: Own It!" can help every teen have an awesome life. Written by veteran therapists Nicole Jon Sievers and Norene Gonsiewski, "It's Your Mind: Own It!" is a treasure chest of neuroscience-based information to help youth 1) understand why they're thinking what they're thinking and why they're feeling what they're feeling, 2) learn to exterminate automatic negative thoughts (ANTs), and 3) master strategies for dealing with setbacks and for embracing challenges. This innovative manual for teaching teens to take control of their roller coaster of feelings is grounded in Cognitive Behavioral Theory and delightfully illustrated with some...

"The One and Only You!" is a workbook for children ages 9-13 (grades 4-6) to support them in being their best selves. Based on my years of being a counselor, educator, and mother of five, I have learned what children need to grow healthy and thrive. In "The One and Only You," I combine that knowledge with the latest neuroscience-based research and my years of practicing Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). Given the recent sharp rise in teen depression, anxiety, and suicide rates and the fact that anxiety affects nearly one-third of adolescents today, I am committed to arming kids with CBT and mindfulness tools early enough in their lives so as to shift the trajectory for our country's 24 million middle school kids. My book is my effort to assist them in reaching their teen years resilient and with the skills to talk back to their negative thoughts. Beautifully and amply illustrated, the book is kid friendly with lots of activities for self-exploration and open space for creativity. An appendix also offers Group Enrichment Exercises for teachers, counselors, group leaders, parents, supportive adults, and caregivers.

The news sure looks bad: rapidly shifting student demographics, the ever-increasing speed of technological innovation, and extreme legislative and public pressure are squeezing colleges and universities into a lose-lose race toward irrelevancy. Detailed in countless articles and books, the challenges faced by institutions of higher learning in the U.S. are varied and weighty. But higher education is far from doomed. It is at this inflection point in which independent colleges and universities have the opportunity to revolutionize higher education. It is time to pivot towards a new university, one that radically refocuses structure and pedagogy on students and their learning; reimagines the f...

Beyond the University

Contentious debates over the benefits—or drawbacks—of a liberal education are as old as America itself. From Benjamin Franklin to the Internet pundits, critics of higher education have attacked its irrelevance and elitism—often calling for more vocational instruction. Thomas Jefferson, by contrast, believed that nurturing a student’s capacity for lifelong learning was useful for science and commerce while also being essential for democracy. In this provocative contribution to the disputes, university president Michael S. Roth focuses on important moments and seminal thinkers in America’s long-running argument over vocational vs. liberal education. Conflicting streams of thought flo...

Staying Alive: A Love Story

Staying Alive: A Love Story is a story of hope and renewal that centers on a woman’s search for meaning after the untimely death of her 49-year-old husband. Coupled with other experiences of loss in her life she is determined to, with her children, persevere.Like Annie Dillard, Hayden draws on the rhythms and rituals of the natural world to explore her Brooklyn roots and New England adulthood. Wild creatures and domesticated critters, seasides and hillsides proffer comfort and understanding as she comes to realize that “no more than a hairline and no less than an eternity” separate her from the man she loved. Even with the wear and tear her faith endures, it rarely diminishes. Her purpo...

I will always and forever feel I have a 'hole' in my life where my mother once existed. I think, when you have to think about the fact you might have to take care of your parents someday and juggle kids at the same timeIt's a scary proposition. We had open communication during and before the breast cancer. But then after the breast cancer, I was often afraid to bring things up, in trying to protect Mom. This insightful book tells the stories of women whose mothers had breast cancer. It uses their own voices to express the common fears and expectations of daughters in the periods before and during their mothers' illnesses, involving genetic risks, death and dying, and changes in their relatio...

"The authors of this volume elucidate the remarkable role played by religion in the shaping and reshaping of narrative forms in antiquity and late antiquity in a variety of ways. This is particularly evident in ancient Jewish and Christian narrative, which is in the focus of most of the contributions, but also in some “pagan” novels such as that of Heliodorus, which is dealt with as well in the third part of the volume, both in an illuminating comparison with Christian novels and in an inspiring rethinking of Heliodorus's relation to Neoplatonism. All of these essays, from diAerent perspectives, illuminate the interplay between narrative and religion, and show how religious concerns and ...
