The Bride of Christ - A Metaphor for the Church
Lumen gentium, the Dogmatic Constitution on the Church of the Second Vatican Council, uses various images to speak about the Church. This study is about the Church as the Bride of Christ. Unlike the great images of the Church as the People of God and the Body of Christ, the image of the Church as the Bride of Christ has never been extensively examined since the Second Vatican Council. The current research is a biblical and systematic-theological study of this image. Its main question is what this metaphor can tell us about the essence of the Church, and what its consequences are for the life of the Church today.
Religious Propaganda and Missionary Competition in the New Testament World
Religious Propaganda is a pivotal concept for the Hellenistic and Roman epochs in the History of Religions. The term refers to the various competing religious and philosophical movements and currents during those periods. Renowned scholars (H. Attridge, K. Baltzer, J. Collins, A. Dewey, H. Koester, A.T. Kraabel, D. Lührmann, J. Robinson, W. Schottroff, E. Schüssler Fiorenza, A. Yarbro Collins and others) interpret Pagan, Jewish, and Christian sources with a view toward elucidating the confrontation of Jewish and Christian groups with their respective social, economic, religious, and political contexts. The authors seek to demonstrate the significance of missionary and propagandistic themes as well as strategies for the self-understanding of Jews and Christians at the turn of the eras. The articles, 25 in all, draw upon the broad expanse of scholarly work in the History of Religions pertaining to this period: the authors discuss methodology and the state of research, and they forge ahead in the exploration of the intertestamental and New Testament writings.
New Qumran Texts and Studies
New Qumran Texts and Studies contains 18 papers from the first meeting of the International Organization for Qumran Studies (Paris, 1992). Seven studies analyse parts of previously unedited texts: 4Q47 (A. Rofé, E.C. Ulrich), 4Q222 (J.C. VanderKam), 4Q265 (J.M. Baumgarten), 4Q286-290 (B. Nitzan), 4Q385B (D. Dimant), and the Psalm scrolls (P.W. Flint). Some of the other studies discuss various aspects of well known texts: 1QIsaa (J. Cook), The Temple Scroll (L.H. Schiffman, D.D. Swanson), and the Hodayot (L. Vegas Montaner). Yet others cover a range of subjects: the publication process (E. Tov), the wilderness community (G.J. Brooke), the scrolls and the New Testament (J. Kampen, H.-W. Kuhn), computer aided scrolls research (A. Lange), dating (E.-M. Laperrousaz), and wisdom traditions (G.W. Nebe).

The Fabric of Early Christianity
This volume celebrates the unique contributions of Helmut Koester, who has been a leader for fifty years as scholar, professor, editor, and mentor. Having studied at the universities of Heidelberg and Marburg, Koester was a student of both Gÿnther Bornkamm and Rudolf Bultmann. He began teaching at Harvard Divinity School in 1958, where he is currently John H. Morison Research Professor of Divinity and Winn Research Professor of Ecclesiastical History. He is the chair of the New Testament Editorial Board of Hermeneia: A Critical and Historical Commentary on the Bible and long-time editor of Harvard Theological Review (1975Ð1999). Among his numerous publications are Trajectories through Early Christianity (with James M. Robinson); Ancient Christian Gospels; History, Culture, and Religion of the Hellenistic Age; History and Literature of Early Christianity; and The Cities of Paul: Images and Interpretations from the Harvard Archaeology Project (CD-ROM). He was President of the Society of Biblical Literature in 1991 and was awarded an honorary doctorate from Humboldt University (Berlin) in 2006.
