Trust Your Feelings

This book is about discernment. To discern means to look for clues in your innermost experience in order to know what to do or what not to do. More precisely, discernment means paying attention to what is happening in the very depths of your heart. Christians believe that a careful reading of our deepest emotions can reveal what God is inviting us to do. The language that God speaks today is that of human experience. The book opens with a general overview about the practice of discernment and examines the role of our heart, our intelligence and our will. It then explains how discernment can be practiced in daily life, how discernment can help in making choices, and in knowing whether something is good or bad. Then ten different emotionally charged situations are explored. Finally, the book addresses the question of whether or not discernment is reserved for Christians, and also briefly discusses discernment in a community setting. The book concludes with a reflection on discernment as a way of life.

Did Jesus Really Exist?

What do Christians believe? What is typical of the Christian faith and how Christians live their faith? With 52 questions and answers, this book gives you an overview of the content of the Christian faith. You can read it as an introduction to Christianity. If you are already familiar with it, then it is a deepening refreshment of the basic elements. The questions are taken from life. Is believing for simple souls? Did Jesus really exist? What do people do in heaven? Is God a judge who condemns? Why should you forgive yourself? Does suffering make sense? Are the other religions wrong? Has Jesus laughed? All pieces can be read in a maximum of two minutes. The answer is always followed by two questions to work on it individually or together with others. There are also references to five other questions relating to the subject under discussion. At the end of the book is a list with a short description of 52 common words such as prayer, grace, heaven, Easter, sin, sacrament and devil. In the text these words are marked with an asterisk.

The Art of Spiritual Direction

This is a concrete, practical book about spiritual accompaniment. While there may be no shortage of books on this matter, most of these books remain somewhat abstract in the way they highlight the beauty of this ministry and point out its pitfalls. This book instead resembles a toolbox with a user’s manual. In six chapters, the author presents the following tools: ‘there is no rush’, ‘listening by following’, ‘searching for the soul’, ‘going deeper’, ‘evaluating’, and ‘accompanying towards spiritual maturity’. By means of examples and case studies, he demonstrates how these tools may be used to good effect. Two introductory chapters discuss the choice for a practice-oriented book and the core values of an Ignatian approach to spiritual accompaniment. A final chapter specifically focuses on vocational discernment. New spiritual directors can learn from this book the tricks of the trade and experienced directors can be encouraged to reflect upon their own practice. Although it is written from a Roman Catholic, Jesuit background, this book may be used in a wider variety of Christian contexts.

Sharing the Wisdom of Time

Christmas Day 2021 sees the release of a Netflix series, Stories of a Generation with Pope Francis, based on this book. Pope Francis views elders as reservoirs of wisdom and historical memory and believes their insights will offer future generations much-needed understanding and direction. More than 250 people were interviewed and Loyola Press sent a collection of stories to the Vatican. These encompassed universal themes of love, loss, survival, hope, peace in the face of unimaginable tragedy, and above all, faith. Pope Francis received every story, prayed over them, and responded with sensitivity and grace to 31 of the stories and the issues they raise. In his Preface, Pope Francis lays out his reasons for this collection of wisdom stories and the movement he hopes it inspires. He also contributes as a fellow elder, offering a story from his own life at the start of each chapter . And in his own wise and compassionate way, he serves as a spiritual shepherd, commenting on dozens of heartfelt stories.

A core tenet of Ignatian spirituality is that God can be found in all things. From the standpoint of the Jesuits, “all things” most definitely includes humor! In Jesuits Telling Jokes, Nikolaas Sintobin, SJ, uses a little Jesuit jocularity to introduce us to the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits)—how they began, who they are, what they do. Each chapter opens with a humorous cartoon and joke to illuminate one particular aspect of the Jesuits, and the rest of the chapter offers a brief but insightful look into a foundational Ignatian principle or practice, such as the discernment of spirits, finding freedom in obedience, and making the street a monastery. For anyone wanting a good laugh and a great introduction to how the Jesuits live, work, think, and pray, Jesuits Telling Jokes is the perfect place to start.
