Evolution of China’s Global Foreign Policy Discourse in the 21st Century

China’s rapid economic development in recent decades has significantly boosted its international political activities as evidenced by the promotion of a set of relevant global foreign policy doctrines. Unlike the concepts adopted under Mao Zedong and Deng Xiaoping, which were primarily ideological, China’s foreign policy conceptions since the early 2000s have been more scientific and commercial. The book analyses factors that influenced the change of foreign policy discourse of China during Xi Jinping’s Premiership (from 2012 till now). The book analyses the genesis and contents of modern China’s major foreign policy conceptions, such as the “One Belt, One Road” Initiative. These...

Science diplomacy is becoming an important tool by which states can more effectively promote and secure their foreign policy agendas. Recognising the role science plays at national and international levels and identifying a state’s national diplomatic style can help to construct a ‘national style’ in science diplomacy. In turn, understanding science diplomacy can help one evaluate a state’s potential for global governance and to ad-dress global issues on a systematic scale. By using a Realist framework and by testing proposed hypotheses, this study highlights how different national styles in science di-plomacy affect competition between major powers and their shared responsibility for global problems. This study adds to general understanding of the practice of diplomacy as it intersects with the sciences.

Inverse Problems in Physical Diagnostics

Inverse Problems in Physical Diagnostics

Unlike direct problems related to the solution of differential equations, inverse problems are typically expressed by integral equations. These equations relate media parameters to parameters of a measured signal, or input parameters to output ones in various measurement systems. The solution of integral equations is, with few exceptions, an ill-posed problem, and additional a priori information about the exact solution should be used to solve such problems. The specific character of the a priori information determines various regularisation methods that are in use here to obtain an approximate solution: Tikhonov's method, statistical regularisation method, methods based on the use of additional equations or restrictions or of models with limited number of unknown parameters. The main point of this book is the study of convergence properties of each method and the wide application of numerical modelling that gives the accuracy of the solution in a chosen metric. It is an unaccustomed procedure for physicists, but, because there is no proportionality between data and solution errors in ill-posed problems, such approach is inevitable.
