Science and Civilisation in China: Volume 6, Biology and Biological Technology, Part 3, Agro-Industries and Forestry

Contains two separate works. The first, by Christian Daniels, is a comprehensive history of Chinese sugar cane technology from ancient times to the early twentieth century. Dr Daniels includes an account of the contribution of Chinese techniques and machinery to the development of world sugar technology in the pre-modern period, devoting special attention to the transfer of this technology to the countries of South-East and East Asia in the period after the sixteenth century. The second, by Nicholas K. Menzies, is a history of forestry in China. A final section compares China's history of deforestation with the cases of Europe and Japan.

Science and Civilisation in China, Part 1, Paper and Printing

Part one of the fifth volume of Joseph Needham's great enterprise is written by one of the project's collaborators. Professor Tsien Tsuen-Hsuin, working in regular consultation with Dr Needham, has written the most comprehensive account of every aspect of paper and printing in China to be published in the West. From a close study of the vast mass of source material, Professor Tsien brings order and illumination to an area of technology which has been of profound importance in the spread of civilisation. The main body of the book is a detailed study of the invention, technology and aesthetic development of printing in China. From the growth and ultimate refinements of early woodcut printing to the spread of printing from movable type and the development of book-binding, Professor Tsien carries the story forward to the beginning of the nineteenth century when 'more printed pages existed in Chinese than in all other languages put together'.

As business cycles speed up, many customers gain significant competitive advantage from quicker and more accurate business decision-making by using real data. For many customers, choosing the path to co-locate their transactional and analytical workloads on System z® better leverages their existing investment in hardware, software, and skills. We created a project to address a number of best practice questions on how to manage these newer, analytical type workloads, especially when co-located with traditional transactional workloads. The goal of this IBM® Redbooks® publication is to provide technical guidance and performance trade-offs associated with resource management and potentially D...

The IBM® DB2® Analytics Accelerator Version 2.1 for IBM z/OS® (also called DB2 Analytics Accelerator or Query Accelerator in this book and in DB2 for z/OS documentation) is a marriage of the IBM System z® Quality of Service and Netezza® technology to accelerate complex queries in a DB2 for z/OS highly secure and available environment. Superior performance and scalability with rapid appliance deployment provide an ideal solution for complex analysis. This IBM Redbooks® publication provides technical decision-makers with a broad understanding of the IBM DB2 Analytics Accelerator architecture and its exploitation by documenting the steps for the installation of this solution in an existing DB2 10 for z/OS environment. In this book we define a business analytics scenario, evaluate the potential benefits of the DB2 Analytics Accelerator appliance, describe the installation and integration steps with the DB2 environment, evaluate performance, and show the advantages to existing business intelligence processes.

Healthcare Infrastructure, Resilience and Climate Change

This book highlights the vulnerability of healthcare buildings in the context of climate change-triggered extreme weather events (EWEs) and the case for mitigation. With a concise discussion on climate change and its consequences in the form of such events, a cost model and equations that register losses and help quantify them are then presented. The model can be used to estimate the significant potential loss that might occur during an EWE and help healthcare facilities prepare for them. The book analyses cases of major EWEs in India over the last two decades and collates the data available into various categories. Through this research the authors have developed a framework which assists h...
