Particularly in the humanities and social sciences, festschrifts are a popular forum for discussion. The IJBF provides quick and easy general access to these important resources for scholars and students. The festschrifts are located in state and regional libraries and their bibliographic details are recorded. Since 1983, more than 639,000 articles from more than 29,500 festschrifts, published between 1977 and 2010, have been catalogued.

Algebraic Groups and Their Birational Invariants

Since the late 1960s, methods of birational geometry have been used successfully in the theory of linear algebraic groups, especially in arithmetic problems. This book--which can be viewed as a significant revision of the author's book, Algebraic Tori (Nauka, Moscow, 1977)--studies birational properties of linear algebraic groups focusing on arithmetic applications. The main topics are forms and Galois cohomology, the Picard group and the Brauer group, birational geometry of algebraic tori, arithmetic of algebraic groups, Tamagawa numbers, $R$-equivalence, projective toric varieties, invariants of finite transformation groups, and index-formulas. Results and applications are recent. There is an extensive bibliography with additional comments that can serve as a guide for further reading.

Control and Nonlinearity

Control and Nonlinearity

This book presents methods to study the controllability and the stabilization of nonlinear control systems in finite and infinite dimensions. The emphasis is put on specific phenomena due to nonlinearities. In particular, many examples are given where nonlinearities turn out to be essential to get controllability or stabilization. Various methods are presented to study the controllability or to construct stabilizing feedback laws. The power of these methods is illustrated by numerous examples coming from such areas as celestial mechanics, fluid mechanics, and quantum mechanics. The book is addressed to graduate students in mathematics or control theory, and to mathematicians or engineers with an interest in nonlinear control systems governed by ordinary or partial differential equations.

Proceedings of the St. Petersburg Mathematical Society, Volume XIV

Contains articles on analysis, probability, partial differential operators, frames, and other areas of mathematics. This volume also contains a comprehensive article about the classification of pseudo-regular convex polyhedra. It is suitable for a broad group of graduate students and researchers interested in the topics presented here.

Local Stabilizability of Nonlinear Control Systems

This is one of the first books presenting stabilizability of nonlinear systems in a well-organized and detailed way, the problem, its motivation, features and results. Control systems defined by ordinary differential equations are dealt with. Many worked examples have been included. The main focus is on the mathematical aspects of the problem, but some important applications are also described. This book will be suitable as a textbook for advanced university courses, and also as a tool for control theorists and researchers. An extensive list of references is included.

Control Theory from the Geometric Viewpoint

This book presents some facts and methods of the Mathematical Control Theory treated from the geometric point of view. The book is mainly based on graduate courses given by the first coauthor in the years 2000-2001 at the International School for Advanced Studies, Trieste, Italy. Mathematical prerequisites are reduced to standard courses of Analysis and Linear Algebra plus some basic Real and Functional Analysis. No preliminary knowledge of Control Theory or Differential Geometry is required. What this book is about? The classical deterministic physical world is described by smooth dynamical systems: the future in such a system is com pletely determined by the initial conditions. Moreover, t...
