Desiring India: Representations through British and French Eyes 1584-1857
The reception and construction of the image of India by the Western, in particular French, German and English travellers, writers and thinkers is the theme of this volume, a collection of twelve essays by academics from sundry parts of the globe. Giving a new twist to Indological, philological or postcolonial understanding of travel narratives, the authors here attempt to give fresh impetus to the discovery of India story from perspectives of cultural history, historiography, ethnography, material culture, economic modes of production, fictional travel, epistolary discourse, theatrical representation of widowhood, women in the Mutiny, feminist reading of the Mughal court, colonial painting and classical music. Circumscribed by the dates of the arrival of Ralph Fitch, the first English traveller and the Mutiny, the first War of Indian Independence this anthology revives an interest in the early modern to the colonial appropriation of India in the Western imaginary.

Prayer Books and Piety in Late Medieval and Early Modern Europe / Gebetbücher und Frömmigkeit in Spätmittelalter und Früher Neuzeit
This collected volume is dedicated to the role of prayer books in lay piety in medieval and early modern contexts. Instead of focusing on individual examples, it places them within the broader genre of devotional literature and considers them in connection with prevailing cultural, religious and artistic developments, taking into account the Reformation, the printing press and growing interest in lay piety, in the context of increasing individualism, developing literacy, privatization and/or personalization of religion. Contextualising devotional literature, the volume refines understandings of religious practice fostered by traditional Catholicism and early modern Protestantism and its relationship with the written word, locating the use of books within a devotional 'diet' that included oral recitation of prayers as well as contemplation of images. Stressing continuities, often against the grain of existing literature, this volume highlights differences between regional cultures of prayer in contrast to norms set by the universal Church and emphasizes the tension between public/communal and private/individual devotion.
Archaeology of Religion in South Asia
In the religious landscape of early medieval (c. AD 600-1200) Bihar and Bengal, poly-religiosity was generally the norm than an exception, which entailed the evolution of complex patterns of inter-religious equations. Buddhism, Brahmanism and Jainism not only coexisted but also competed for social patronage, forcing them to enter into complex interactions with social institutions and processes. Through an analysis of the published archaeological data, this work explores some aspects of the social history of Buddhist, Brahmanical and Jaina temples and shrines, and Buddhist stūpas and monasteries in early medieval Bihar and Bengal. This archaeological history of religions questions many ‘established’ textual reconstructions, and enriches our understanding of the complex issue of the decline of Buddhism in this area.
