Algebraic Geometry II

This two-part volume contains numerous examples and insights on various topics. The authors have taken pains to present the material rigorously and coherently. This book will be immensely useful to mathematicians and graduate students working in algebraic geometry, arithmetic algebraic geometry, complex analysis and related fields.

Commutative Harmonic Analysis II

Classical harmonic analysis is an important part of modern physics and mathematics, comparable in its significance with calculus. Created in the 18th and 19th centuries as a distinct mathematical discipline it continued to develop, conquering new unexpected areas and producing impressive applications to a multitude of problems. It is widely understood that the explanation of this miraculous power stems from group theoretic ideas underlying practically everything in harmonic analysis. This book is an unusual combination of the general and abstract group theoretic approach with a wealth of very concrete topics attractive to everybody interested in mathematics. Mathematical literature on harmonic analysis abounds in books of more or less abstract or concrete kind, but the lucky combination as in this volume can hardly be found.

Written in honor of Victor Havin (1933–2015), this volume presents a collection of surveys and original papers on harmonic and complex analysis, function spaces and related topics, authored by internationally recognized experts in the fields. It also features an illustrated scientific biography of Victor Havin, one of the leading analysts of the second half of the 20th century and founder of the Saint Petersburg Analysis Seminar. A complete list of his publications, as well as his public speech "Mathematics as a source of certainty and uncertainty", presented at the Doctor Honoris Causa ceremony at Linköping University, are also included.

Hankel Operators and Their Applications

The purpose of this book is to describe the theory of Hankel operators, one of the most important classes of operators on spaces of analytic func tions. Hankel operators can be defined as operators having infinite Hankel matrices (i. e. , matrices with entries depending only on the sum of the co ordinates) with respect to some orthonormal basis. Finite matrices with this property were introduced by Hankel, who found interesting algebraic properties of their determinants. One of the first results on infinite Han kel matrices was obtained by Kronecker, who characterized Hankel matri ces of finite rank as those whose entries are Taylor coefficients of rational functions. Since then Hankel opera...

Operators and Function Theory

In the modern study of Hilbert space operators there has been an increasingly subtle involvement with analytic function theory. This is evident in the analysis of subnormal operators, Toeplitz operators and Hankel operators, for example. On the other hand the operator theoretic viewpoint of interpolation by analytic functions is a powerful one. There has been significant activity in recent years, within these enriching interactions, and the time seemed right for an overview ot the main lines of development. The Advanced Study Institute 'Operators and Function Theory' in Lancaster, 1984, was devoted to this, and this book contains ex panded versions (and one contraction) of the main lecture p...

Slavic Cultures in the Middle Ages

The acceptance of Christianity in the tenth century is the most significant cultural event in the history of modern Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus. A vast reservoir of cultural concepts, expressions, and iconographic images has developed within the Eastern Orthodox tradition, and now Slavic specialists, theologians, historians, and literary scholars can turn to a collection which examines the majestic sweep of a thousand years of Slavic Christianity. This three-volume collection brings together essays from two international conferences. The present volume explores the history and influence of Christianization from the tenth to the seventeenth century. Volume II will examine cultural history fr...
