Cutting the Distance
This book represents a valuable contribution to the study of Asia–Latin America relations from the unprecedented collaboration of leading Latin American specialists of China, Japan, and Korea, representing views from their respective countries. The academic literature on this topic remains quite limited in spite of rapid expansion of the interregional trade and investment and active engagements to institutionalize relationships in recent years. The Economy and Business Environment of Vietnam

Asian Development Bank–Japan Scholarship Program
The Japan Scholarship Program (JSP) was established in 1988 to provide well-qualified citizens of developing member countries an opportunity to undertake postgraduate studies in economics, management, science and technology, and other development-related fields at 27 educational institutions in 10 countries in Asia and the Pacific. Between 1988 and 2012, Japan contributed around $135 million to the JSP. A total of 2,966 scholarships have been awarded to recipients from 35 member countries, 1,045 of whom are women. Of the total, 2,627 scholars have already completed their courses. An average of 150 scholarships are being awarded each year.
Crowdfunding
This book discusses the concepts, types, models, and patterns of crowdfunding to provide a comprehensive portrait of this newly developed market-based financial tool. Economic Growth and Transition of Industrial Structure in East Asia
This book explores new frontiers in the research of economic growth and industrial reconstruction, analyzing economic growth and transitions in industrial structure in East Asia with a variety of data. First, the effects of demographic change on trade openness is analyzed empirically using the panel data of APEC countries. Second, the determinant of wage and housing costs are estimated using survey data collected from peasant workers in China. Third, the determinants of conquests among nomads in or near China and dynasties from world history are analyzed empirically using data regarding dynasties. Fourth, critiques on Emmanuel’s unequal exchange theory are investigated based on the profit data in the world. Automobile Industry Supply Chain in Thailand
This research focuses on the process of growth in the automobile industries in the ASEAN region. ASEAN is drawing attention both from the vantage point of its position as an automobile-producing region and as a potential automobile market. Thailand in particular has long treated automobile production as a national strategy, and this research puts considerable focus on Thailand's initiatives. Since 2012, the authors have been carrying out on-site surveys and have visited many of the suppliers that form the local automobile industry; this published research represents a summary of those findings. The fields of specialty of this study’s respective authors differ, so analyses have been made from a range of vectors. In particular, the focus is on the supply chain in what is generally referred to as a keiretsu.
Sino-Mexican Trade Relations
This book undertakes two main tasks. First, it provides an overview of Sino-Mexican trade and economic relations since the normalization of diplomatic relations in the 1980s. Second, it presents a re-evaluation of Mexico’s trade policies with China, from the import substitution industrialization (ISI) period in the early 1990s to the strengthening of economic and trade relations in recent years. Both aspects are addressed within a unified framework by documenting historical events and conducting empirical analyses throughout Mexico’s economic development, which has been characterized by both growth and stagnation. The book analyzes the Sino-Mexican trade conflicts and cooperation by examining cases of antidumping (AD) and flows of international trade, and by addressing the current obstacles.
Community-Based Reconstruction of Society
This volume presents an academic proposal, developed by a joint research group of leading scholars in the social and natural sciences from universities affected by global-scale mega disasters occurring in Asia in recent decades. These include Kobe University, which experienced the 1995 Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake; Tohoku University and Iwate University, both at the center of post-disaster reconstruction following the 2011 East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami; Syiah Kuala University in Aceh, Indonesia, which was hard-hit by the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami; and Sichuan University, which took a leading role in post-disaster recovery following the 2004 Sichuan Earthquake. Presenting a comparative analysis focused on lessons learned from the recovery phase following the East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami, the book addresses in detail the questions of what should be done to enable truly community-based town planning, and what roles should be played by universities in order to achieve those goals.
