Northern Ireland's total waste generation is estimated at 20 million tonnes per year. This report reviews the action being taken by the Department of the Environment and the Environment and Heritage Service to tackle Northern Ireland's waste problem. It examines the degree to which the legislative framework has kept pace with EU requirements; the comprehensiveness of the waste management strategy; the extent to which the strategy has been implemented; and the progress to date.
