Vincent Novello (1781-1861)

Today Vincent Novello (1781-1861) is remembered as the father of the music-publishing firm. Fiona Palmer's evaluation of Novello is the first to provide a rounded view of his life and work, and the nature of his importance both in his own time and to posterity. In his wide-ranging editorial work Novello found his true vocation positioning himself as preservationist, pioneer and philanthropist. His work as composer, though unremarkable in quality, mirrored the demands and expectations of his consumers. Novello emerges from this study as a visionary who single-mindedly pursued greater musical knowledge for the benefit of everyone.

(Music Sales America). Edited with a new English translation by Michael Pilkington. The English translation in this edition is entirely new, and attempts to provide a translation of van Swieten's text that fits Haydn's music. The style used tries to give some flavour of eighteenth-century language while being easily intelligible today, being an eighteenth century work. Arranged for soprano, tenor and bass soloists, SATB and orchestra. English/German edition.

Yet today he is known mostly for his church music, and there is as yet relatively little serious study of his work. This book is the first large-scale study of Howells's music, affording both detailed consideration of individual works and a broad survey of general characteristics and issues. Its coverage is wide-ranging, addressing all aspects of the composer's prolific output and probing many of t...
