Noémie Etienne analysiert die Arbeit der Künstler und Wissenschaftler, die die Dioramen anfertigten, und zeigt, dass Dioramen als Mittel der Wissenserzeugung und -vermittlung eine Geschichte erzählen, die immer politisch ist. Innerhalb des Museums können sie Visionen des Andersseins und der Abstammung erschaffen, die es kritisch zu betrachten gilt.

Why is an object, an artwork, or a person deemed ?exotic?? How does one?s gaze get directed onto things or people seemingly belonging to other regions or cultures? These questions are examined here in relation to a specific context: the Enlightenment era from the Swiss perspective. This publication brings together research by academics and museum specialists for the first time in order to rethink this time period and geography. It contains essays and shorter texts centered on pictures, objects, books, and natural specimens from Swiss museum collections. ?Exotic? in this context refers to things that come from elsewhere and that can be used and ?improved? for the benefit of European powers. This book traces the development of scientific conservation and technical art history. It takes as its starting point the final years of the nineteenth century, which saw the establishment of the first museum laboratory in Berlin, and ground-breaking international conferences on art history and conservation held in pre-World War I Germany. It follows the history of conservation and art history until the 1940s when, from the ruins of World War II, new institutions such as the Istituto Centrale del Restauro emerged, which would shape the post-war art and conservation world. The book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, conservation history, historiography, and history of science and humanities.
