Most of the world is happily witnessing a decline in the burden of COVID-19 disease after the global efforts to develop, produce, and deploy anti-SARS-CoV2 vaccines to massive country-level vaccination campaigns. At the same time, this decline is coming at the cost of a silent public crisis due to the rise in the number of people suffering from the post-COVID-19 syndrome (commonly known as long COVID). These people experience a wide set of symptoms, such as persistent fatigue, post-exertional malaise after minimal physical or mental effort, and unrefreshing sleep, representing a substantial healthcare burden worldwide. Some of these people also comply with the current criteria for the diagnosis of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), a complex disease often stigmatized by society and neglected by research funders over the years.
Whole new areas of immunological research are emerging from the analysis of experimental data, going beyond statistics and parameter estimation into what an applied mathematician would recognise as modelling of dynamical systems. Stochastic methods are increasingly important, because stochastic models are closer to the Brownian reality of the cellular and sub-cellular world.
This volume presents a collection of twenty-five peer-reviewed articles carefully selected from the contributions presented at the XXV Congress of the Portuguese Statistical Society (2021). Containing state-of-the-art developments in theoretical and applied statistics, the book will be accessible to readers with a background in mathematics and statistics, but will also be of interest to researchers from other scientific disciplines (e.g., biology, economics, medicine), who will find a broad range of relevant applications.

It covers a broad scope of theoretical, methodological as well as application-oriented articles in domains such as: Linear Models and Regression, Survival Analysis, Extreme Value Theory, Statistics of Diffusions, Markov Processes and other Statistical Applications.
Public and global health professionals realize that despite significant advances in improving population health and preventing high mortality from communicable and non-communicable diseases and managing/treating both communicable and con-communicable diseases the global population health status remains fragile. This is partly due to the global life pattern in the 21st century making world as a global village. Individuals’ movements in global society have been facilitated rapidly and the current advance in travel and trade across different geographical locations allow rapid spread of any newly identified infectious agents. Therefore, relatively the likelihood of an outbreak and pandemic increases if there is no suitably coordinated active global surveillance in place.
During the last 20 years the Portuguese association of automatic control, Associação Portuguesa de Controlo Automático, with the sponsorship of IFAC have established the CONTROLO conference as a reference international forum where an effective exchange of knowledge and experience amongst researchers active in various theoretical and applied areas of systems and control can take place, always including considerable space for promoting new technical applications and developments, real-world challenges and success stories. In this 11th edition the CONTROLO conference evolved by introducing two strategic partnerships with Spanish and Brazilian associations in automatic control, Comité Español de Automática and Sociedade Brasileira de Automatica, respectively.
