Think Tanks and Emerging Power Policy Networks

This book explores the transforming political climate of several emerging powers—Turkey, China, and India—and the key role think tanks play in that transformation. With case studies from three think tanks, the authors uncover the unique challenges that emerging power think tanks face in gaining recognition as global tanks and how networks will influence this process. To do so, they first establish what it means to be a global think tank in the context of emerging powers. Next, they provide the three case studies beginning with an examination of the Observer Research Foundation, a prominent Indian think tank, followed by a study of China’s Chongyang Institute for Financial Studies, and concluding with a discussion on the Economic Policy Research Foundation of Turkey. Following these case studies, the authors further explore the dynamic of a think tank network with remarks from presidents of think tanks in the T20 think tank network.

Counter-terrorism in South Asia

Radicalism and militancy, political instability, state-terrorism nexus, and growing international interventions make South Asia amongst the most complex security terrains of this age. Counter-Terrorism in South Asia, an outcome of the ORF-Heritage Dialogue on responding to the pervasive phenomenon of terror, is a timely addition to the growing body of literature on terrorism in the region. The two-day dialogue, held in New Delhi in July 2010, involved faculty from Observer Research Foundation, The Heritage Foundation and eminent experts from the United States and India. These chapters, authored by acclaimed security practitioners, foreign policy advisers and researchers, present a contemporary analysis of subjects such as 'Af-Pak' strategy, US-India cooperation, geopolitics of terrorism, insurgency, radicalisation, and nuclear proliferation. Counter-Terrorism in South Asia will be extremely relevant to security practitioners, policy analysts and researchers.

Contest for the Indo-Pacific

The definitive guide to the world's most contested region Updated edition covering the strategic impacts of Covid-19, China's economic coercion against Australia, the Afghanistan withdrawal, Joe Biden, the Quad and US-China rivalry. The Indo-Pacific is both a place and an idea. It is the region central to global prosperity and security. It is also a metaphor for collective action. If diplomacy fails, it will be the theatre of the first general war since 1945. But if its future can be secured, the Indo-Pacific will flourish as a shared space, the centre of gravity in a connected world. What we call different parts of the world - Asia, Europe, the Middle East - seems innocuous. But the name of...

Method in the Madness

Parameswaran Iyer, former Secretary to the Government of India, is best known for leading the implementation of the Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) - Prime Minister Narendra Modi's flagship programme, which became the world's largest sanitation revolution. But Iyer is not your typical bureaucrat. With a far-from-usual career combining two distinguished tenures in the government and an eventful stint outside it, he likes to describe himself as an uncommon 'Insider-Outsider-Insider'. In Method in the Madness, he reflects on the unique path he chose - from cracking the IAS to becoming a globe-trotting World Bank technocrat, to playing the role of a coach to his professional tennis-playing children, to finally returning to India and implementing the SBM. Written with humour and wisdom, this is an inspiring read full of key management insights, practical career advice, and valuable life lessons that will resonate with readers across age groups and professions.
