This dissertation brings together a variety of articles published by Ofelia Ortega-Theologian, professor and the first women to be ordained in the Presbyterian-Reformed Church in Cuba-throughout her professional life and which represent her though and personal interest. These writings purport to cause a debate in the midst of the Cuban church and ecumenical sphere and motivate positive actions to confront all forms if oppression, injustice, poverty and discredit, especially those that affect women. This dissertation which consists of five chapters, each accompanied by pertinent articles, contains a general introduction to the entire work. The chapters that follow each have an introduction in which the author refers to the importance of each theme for her life and ministry, how each article responds to said theme, and how these might be useful for others.

Women within Religions

Women are the majority in almost every cultural or social group. However, their roles vary in various cultures, religions, and traditions. In some cultures and religions, they are highly honored, while in others they are neglected, oppressed, and segregated. This book examines women's role in a few selected world religions, namely Christianity, Islam, African Traditional Religion, Hinduism, and Buddhism. It also surveys the concept of patriarchy and the various theoretical perspectives surrounding it. Eventually, this book discusses the concept of ecofeminism and how feminists perceive of the relationship between nature and the oppression of women. The book grapples with the question, "In what way do world religions perceive of women and their role in their teachings and traditions?" This book is important for students and teachers of gender studies, African theology, and Christian theology as a whole.

A View from the Balcony--Opera through Womanist Eyes

In this theological work, readers are seated in a metaphorical balcony as a counter melody is composed within America’s operatic tradition. By using imaginary opera glasses, readers are invited to critically view American society and history. The most popular folk songs of white Southerners, Western settlers, and Northern elites were composed from chords of colonialism, white supremacy, patriarchy, hegemony, and xenophobia—forms of anthropological poverty. These songs were, and remain, the most discordant melodies heard by indigenous and enslaved persons in America. Indicting the “church” for its complicity in these oppressions, this work offers the reader a historical glimpse at the...
